What is Forlax® (Macrogol 4000) used for?

Forlax® is commonly used for carrying water to your stool, which loosens and increases stool volume, helping to overcome sluggish bowels, working gradually within 24 to 48 hours. Macrogol 4000 is not absorbed into the bloodstream or broken down in the body. It is used for the treatment of constipation in adults and children aged 8 years and above.

How should I take Forlax® (Macrogol 4000)?

Always take this medicine exactly as described in this leaflet or as your doctor, pharmacist or nurse have told you.

Forlax® is a powder that you dissolve in a glass of water (125 ml) and drink immediately.

How do I store Forlax® (Macrogol 4000)?

Forlax® is best stored at room temperature away from direct light and moisture. To prevent drug damage, you should not store Forlax® in the bathroom or the freezer. There may be different brands of Forlax® that may have different storage needs. It is important to always check the product package for instructions on storage, or ask your pharmacist. For safety, you should keep all medicines away from children and pets.

You should not flush Forlax® down the toilet or pour them into a drain unless instructed to do so. It is important to properly discard this product when it is expired or no longer needed. Consult your pharmacist for more details about how to safely discard your product.

Precautions & warnings

What should I know before using Forlax® (Macrogol 4000)?

Consult with your doctor or pharmacist, if:

  • You are pregnant or breastfeeding. This is because, while you are expecting or feeding a baby, you should only take medicines on the recommendation of a doctor.
  • You are taking any other medicines. This includes any medicines you are taking which are available to buy without a prescription, such as herbal and complementary medicines.
  • You have allergy with any ingredients of Forlax® or other medications.
  • You have any other illnesses, disorders, or medical conditions.

Is it safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

Pregnancy:

This medicine can be used during pregnancy, though as with all medicines you should get medical advice from your doctor first. The medicine is not absorbed into the bloodstream in significant amounts and no harmful effects on the developing baby are expected.

Breastfeeding:

This medicine can be used by women who are breastfeeding.

Always consult your health care provider prior to using this medication if you are pregnant, breastfeeding.

Side effects

What side effects can occur from Forlax® (Macrogol 4000)?

Forlax® may cause these side effects, such as:

  • Allergic reactions such as rash, hives, swelling of the face or throat, breathing difficulties, faintness or collapse.
  • Abdominal pain;
  • Bloating;
  • Nausea;
  • Diarrhea;
  • Vomiting;
  • Urgent need to go to the toilet.
  • Passing gas.

Not everyone experiences these side effects. There may be some side effects not listed above. If you have any concerns about a side-effect, please consult your doctor or pharmacist.

Interactions

What drugs may interact with Forlax® (Macrogol 4000)?

Forlax® may interact with other drugs that you are currently taking, which can change how your drug works or increase your risk for serious side effects. To avoid any potential drug interactions, you should keep a list of all the drugs you are using (including prescription drugs, nonprescription drugs, and herbal products) and share it with your doctor and pharmacist. For your safety, do not start, stop, or change the dosage of any drugs without your doctor’s approval.

There have been isolated reports of decreased efficacy with some concomitantly administered medicinal products, e.g., anti-epileptics. Therefore, other medicines should not be taken orally for one hour before and for one hour after taking Forlax®.

Does food or alcohol interact with Forlax® (Macrogol 4000)?

Forlax® may interact with food or alcohol by altering the way the drug works or increase the risk for serious side effects. Please discuss with your doctor or pharmacist any potential food or alcohol interactions before using this drug.

What health conditions may interact with Forlax® (Macrogol 4000)?

Forlax® may interact with your health condition. This interaction may worsen your health condition or alter the way the drug works. It is important to always let your doctor and pharmacist know all the health conditions you currently have, especially:

  • Severe inflammatory bowel disease such as ulcerative colitis, Crohn’s disease;
  • Toxic megacolon;
  • Perforation or risk of perforation of ileus or suspicion of intestinal obstruction or symptomatic stenosis;
  • Painful abdominal syndromes of undetermined reason;
  • Fructose intolerance.

What is the dose of Forlax® (Macrogol 4000) for an adult?

A daily dose can range from 1-2 sachets daily, up to a maximum of 8 sachets daily, preferably taken as a single dose in the morning.

What is the dose of Forlax® (Macrogol 4000) for a child?

  • Forlax® is not recommended for use in children below the age of 8 years.
  • In children 8 years and above, the recommended dose is 1 to 2 sachets daily, preferably taken as a single dose in the morning. Maximum duration: 3 months.

How is Forlax® (Macrogol 4000) available?

Forlax® is available in the following dosage forms and strengths:

  • Forlax® 10 g powder for oral solution in sachet.

What should I do in case of an emergency or overdose?

In case of an emergency or an overdose, call your local emergency services (115) or go to your nearest emergency room.

What should I do if I miss a dose?

If you miss a dose of Forlax®, take it as soon as possible. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and take your regular dose as scheduled. Do not take a double dose.
