What is Vyvanse® (lisdexamfetamine) used for?

Vyvanse® is a central nervous system stimulant. It affects chemicals in the brain and nerves that contribute to hyperactivity and impulse control.

Vyvanse® is used to treat attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in adults and in children who are at least 6 years old.

Vyvanse® is also used to treat moderate to severe binge eating disorder in adults. This medicine is not to be used for obesity or weight loss.

How should I take Vyvanse® (lisdexamfetamine)?

Take Vyvanse® exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Follow all directions on your prescription label. Your doctor may occasionally change your dose to make sure you get the best results. Do not take this medicine in larger or smaller amounts or for longer than recommended.

Vyvanse® should be taken in the morning with or without food.

Do not take this medicine in the evening because it may cause sleep problems (insomnia).

The chewable tablet must be chewed before you swallow it.

Do not crush, chew, break, or divide a capsule. Swallow the capsule whole. To make swallowing easier, you may open the capsule and sprinkle the medicine into a glass of water or mix it with yogurt. After the medicine has dissolved, drink or eat the mixture immediately. Do not save for later use.

Chewable tablets must be completely chewed before swallowing.

Your doctor will need to check your progress on a regular basis. Your blood pressure and heart rate will need to be checked often.

How do I store Vyvanse® (lisdexamfetamine)?

Vyvanse® is best stored at room temperature away from direct light and moisture. To prevent drug damage, you should not store Vyvanse® in the bathroom or the freezer. There may be different brands of Vyvanse® that may have different storage needs. It is important to always check the product package for instructions on storage, or ask your pharmacist. For safety, you should keep all medicines away from children and pets.

You should not flush Vyvanse® down the toilet or pour them into a drain unless instructed to do so. It is important to properly discard this product when it is expired or no longer needed. Consult your pharmacist for more details about how to safely discard your product.

Precautions & warnings

What should I know before using Vyvanse® (lisdexamfetamine)?

Before using this drug, tell your doctor if:

• You are pregnant or breastfeeding. This is because, while you are expecting or feeding a baby, you should only take medicines on the recommendation of a doctor.
• You are taking any other medicines. This includes any medicines you are taking which are available to buy without a prescription, such as herbal and complementary medicines.
• You have allergy with any of active or inactive ingredients of Vyvanse® or other medications.
• You have any other illnesses, disorders, or medical conditions.

Do not use Vyvanse® if you have use a MAO inhibitor in the past 14 days. A dangerous drug interaction could occur. MAO inhibitors include isocarboxazid, linezolid, methylene blue injection, phenelzine, rasagiline, selegiline, and tranylcypromine.

Lisdexamfetamine is a drug of abuse and may be habit-forming. Keep track of the amount of medicine used from each new bottle. You should be aware if anyone is using your medicine improperly or without a prescription. Using this medication improperly can cause death or serious side effects on the heart.

Some stimulants have caused sudden death in certain people. Tell your doctor if you have:

• Heart problems or a congenital heart defect
• High blood pressure
• A family history of heart disease or sudden death
• Coronary artery disease (hardened arteries)
• History of heart attack

Is it safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

There are no adequate studies in women for determining risk when using Vyvanse® during pregnancy or while breastfeeding. Please always consult with your doctor to weigh the potential benefits and risks before taking Vyvanse®. Vyvanse® is pregnancy risk category C, according to the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

Side effects

What side effects can occur from Vyvanse® (lisdexamfetamine)?

Common side effects may include:

• Dry mouth
• Loss of appetite
• Weight loss
• Sleep problems (insomnia)
• Dizziness
• Feeling irritable
• Nausea
• Vomiting
• Stomach pain
• Diarrhea

Stop using Vyvanse® and call your doctor at once if you have:

• Chest pain, shortness of breath, fast or uneven heart rate
• A light-headed feeling, like you might pass out
• Hallucinations (seeing or hearing things that are not real), new behavior problems, aggression, hostility, paranoia
• Unexplained muscle pain, tenderness, or weakness
• Penis erection that is painful or lasts 4 hours or longer (rare)
• Numbness, pain, cold feeling, unexplained wounds, or skin color changes (pale, red, or blue appearance) in your fingers or toes

Get emergency medical help if you have any of these signs of an allergic reaction such as hives; difficulty breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.

Not everyone experiences these side effects. There may be some side effects not listed above. If you have any concerns about a side-effect, please consult your doctor or pharmacist.

Interactions

What drugs may interact with Vyvanse® (lisdexamfetamine)?

Vyvanse® may interact with other drugs that you are currently taking, which can change how your drug works or increase your risk for serious side effects. To avoid any potential drug interactions, you should keep a list of all the drugs you are using (including prescription drugs, nonprescription drugs, and herbal products) and share it with your doctor and pharmacist. For your safety, do not start, stop, or change the dosage of any drugs without your doctor’s approval.

Does food or alcohol interact with Vyvanse® (lisdexamfetamine)?

Vyvanse® may interact with your health condition. This interaction may worsen your health condition or alter the way the drug works. It is important to always let your doctor and pharmacist know all the health conditions you currently have.

Health conditions that may interact with this drug are:

• Kidney disease
• Circulation problems in your hands or feet
• Peripheral vascular disease such as Raynaud’s syndrome
• Depression, mental illness, bipolar illness, psychosis, or suicide attempt

What is the dose of Vyvanse® (lisdexamfetamine) for an adult?

Usual Adult Dose for Attention Deficit Disorder:

Initial dose: 30 mg orally once a day in the morning.

If necessary, the initial daily dose may be increased by 10 mg to 20 mg approximately once a week up to a maximum daily dose of 70 mg. Maintain patients on their optimal dose.

What is the dose of Vyvanse® (lisdexamfetamine) for a child?

What should I do if I miss a dose?

If you miss a dose of Vyvanse®, take it as soon as possible. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and take your regular dose as scheduled. Do not take a double dose
