Don’t Let Enrichment Classes Become A Burden

Nowadays, many parents let their children take part in various extra classes after school, such as math class, swimming, ballet, football, and so on. They hope their children be more talented than other kids, which is not a bad idea. But, are your high hopes a burden for your children?

The pros of enrichment classes

Enrichment classes have many positive effects. They may:

  • Provide your children with opportunities to learn new things.
  • Help your kids develop important skills they need in life like independence, responsibility, time management, etc.
  • Give your kids the chance to experience real life when interacting with many people.
  • Help your children find their passion.
  • Give your kids less time of joining in unhealthy activities such as gambling, playing truant or even smoking.

The cons of enrichment classes

However, everything has two sides. When your children take part in too many activities, it may bring negative effects.

  • Too many classes give children no time to breathe as they have to move fast from one class to another.
  • Stress and anxiety caused by excess enrichment can lead to mental health conditions like depression.
  • Your children may feel bad when their performance cannot meet your expectations.
  • Your kids may have no personal time for themselves.
  • Your kids may become less emotionally competent.
  • Your family may lack together time

How to know if your children are overloaded or not?

Children who are overloaded with enrichment classes:

  • Get sick easily.
  • Are tired, unmotivated and burnt out.
  • Always do their homework while eating dinner.
  • Are missing their normal childhood activities like birthdays, playing with cousins, visiting grandparents.
  • Have mild signs of mental problems.

How to strike a balance?

Your children are too young to be busy. What you need to do is helping your children strike a balance.  Here are some tips you can try:

  • Limit the number of activities that your children join. You and your children need to discuss what they really need and want to learn.
  • Know your children’s strengths and difficulties. Every kid is unique. Find what your children are interested in and invest in it. For example, if your kids love music, you can let them take part in a piano class. And that is enough. They do not need to attend other classes.
  • Have decent family time. You can suggest that every Sunday will be the family time. Then, let your children choose what they want to do on this day.
  • Make sure that your children have their own personal time every day. For example, they can play their favorite game for one hour after finishing homework.
  • Make sure that there is a balance between indoor activities and outdoor activities.
  • Finally, sleep is very important to children. Make sure that they have enough 8 hours of sleep every night.
