What is Ultra Levure® (Saccharomyces boulardii) used for?

Ultra Levure® is commonly used for treating and preventing diarrhea, including infectious types such as rotaviral diarrhea in children, diarrhea caused by gastrointestinal (GI) in adults, traveler’s diarrhea, and diarrhea associated with tube feedings. It is also used to prevent and treat diarrhea caused by the use of antibiotics.

Saccharomyces boulardii is also used for general digestion problems, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), inflammatory bowel syndrome (IBD, Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis), Lyme disease, a bowel disorder called relapsing Clostridium difficilecolitis, and bacterial overgrowth in short bowel syndrome.

Some people use Saccharomyces boulardii for lactose intolerance, urinary tract infections (UTIs), vaginal yeast infections, high cholesterol levels, hives, fever blisters, canker sores, and teen-age acne.

How should I take Ultra Levure® (Saccharomyces boulardii)?

To use this drug in the right way, you should:

  • Do not use more of this product than is recommended on the label.
  • You may take saccharomyces boulardii lyo with or without food.
  • Saccharomyces boulardii lyo is available in capsule and powder form.
  • Do not use different formulations (such as capsules together with powder) at the same time without medical advice.
  • To use the oral powder, tear open the packet and empty the entire contents into at least 4 ounces of water, juice, or milk. Stir this mixture and drink all of it right away. To make sure you get the entire dose, add a little more water to the same glass, swirl gently and drink right away.
  • To make swallowing easier, you may also sprinkle the medicine from a capsule or from the powder packet into a spoonful of yogurt or applesauce. Swallow right away without chewing. Do not save the mixture for later use. Discard the empty capsule.
  • Call your doctor if the condition you are treating with saccharomyces boulardii lyo does not improve, or if it gets worse while using this product.

How do I store Ultra Levure® (Saccharomyces boulardii)?

Ultra Levure® is best stored at room temperature away from direct light and moisture. To prevent drug damage, you should not store Ultra Levure® in the bathroom or the freezer. There may be different brands of Ultra Levure® that may have different storage needs. It is important to always check the product package for instructions on storage, or ask your pharmacist. For safety, you should keep all medicines away from children and pets.

You should not flush Ultra Levure® down the toilet or pour them into a drain unless instructed to do so. It is important to properly discard this product when it is expired or no longer needed. Consult your pharmacist for more details about how to safely discard your product.

What should I know before using Ultra Levure® (Saccharomyces boulardii)?

Before using this drug, you may notice that:

  • Adults. Saccharomyces boulardii is likely safe for most adults when taken by mouth for up to 15 months. It can cause gas in some people. Rarely, it might cause fungal infections that can spread through the bloodstream to the entire body (fungemia).
  • Children. Saccharomyces boulardii is possibly safe for children when taken by mouth appropriately. However, diarrhea in children should be evaluated by a healthcare professional before using Saccharomyces boulardii.
  • Weakened immune system. There is some concern that critically ill people, people who have a weakened immune system, and people who are taking medicines that alter the immune system might have an increased risk for developing a yeast infection that spreads to the bloodstream and the rest of the body (fungemia) if they take Saccharomyces boulardii. Although Saccharomyces generally don’t cause disease, there have been numerous cases of fungemia following its use, primarily in people with a weakened immune system.
  • Yeast allergy. People with yeast allergy can be allergic to products containing Saccharomyces boulardii, and are best advised to avoid these products.

Is it safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

There isn’t enough information about the safety of using this medication during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Please always consult with your doctor to weigh the potential benefits and risks before taking this medication.

Side effects

What side effects can occur from Ultra Levure® (Saccharomyces boulardii)?

When using this drug, there may be some side effects, including:

  • An increase in stomach gas
  • Bloating
  • Signs of infection (such as high fever, chills, persistent cough)

A very serious allergic reaction to this product is rare. However, seek immediate medical attention if you notice any of the following symptoms of a serious allergic reaction:

  • Rash
  • Itching/swelling (especially of the face/tongue/throat)
  • Severe dizziness
  • Trouble breathing

  • Terbinafine (Lamisil)
  • Itraconazole (Sporanox)

The recommended dose is 250-500 mg of Saccharomyces boulardii two to four times a day.

For diarrhea caused by Clostridium difficile

The recommended dose is 1 gram of Saccharomyces boulardii daily for 4 weeks along with antibiotic treatment.

For Crohn’s disease:

The recommended dose is 250 mg of Saccharomyces boulardii three times daily has been used for up to 9 weeks.

The recommended dose is 1 gram of Saccharomyces boulardii daily in combination with usual treatment has also been used.

For ulcerative colitis

The recommended dose is 205 mg of Saccharomyces boulardii three times daily.

For treatment of infections due to the ulcer-causing Helicobacter pylori bacterium

The recommended dose is a dose of 5 billion colony-forming units (CFUs) of Saccharomyces boulardii daily in addition to usual treatment.

What is the dose of Ultra Levure® (Saccharomyces boulardii) for a child?

For diarrhea associated with the use of antibiotics

What should I do in case of an emergency or overdose?

In case of an emergency or an overdose, call your local emergency services or go to your nearest emergency room.

What should I do if I miss a dose?

If you miss a dose of Ultra Levure®, take it as soon as possible. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and take your regular dose as scheduled. Do not take a double dose.
