Rosuvastatin is a statin, a prescription tablet that helps bring down LDL cholesterol. LDL is the type that can slowly build up inside artery walls.
It works mainly in the liver by reducing the amount of cholesterol your body makes. This encourages the liver to remove more LDL cholesterol from the bloodstream, helping to prevent cholesterol from building up in the walls of your arteries. It may also slightly increase HDL (“good”) cholesterol.
Rosuvastatin is usually taken once daily and can be taken at any time of the day. It is commonly prescribed for people with high cholesterol or those who have a higher risk of cardiovascular disease, alongside healthy eating, regular physical activity and other lifestyle measures.
Every individual is different. Your doctor will advise what is suitable for you.
Three strengths are available here. Rosuvastatin is strong even at low doses, so many people do well on 5mg or 10mg.

About rosuvastatin
Rosuvastatin is a prescription statin that lowers LDL cholesterol, the type that builds up in artery walls. It reduces the amount of cholesterol your liver makes, and helps your liver clear more LDL from your blood. Doctors prescribe it to lower the chance of heart attack and stroke, alongside healthy eating, activity and not smoking.
Rosuvastatin is used to treat high LDL cholesterol and to reduce the risk of heart attack and stroke. Doctors prescribe it for people who already have heart or blood vessel disease, people with diabetes or other risk factors, and people with inherited high cholesterol. Your doctor decides based on your overall heart risk, not only one cholesterol number.
No. Rosuvastatin lowers cholesterol and doesn't thin your blood. It's often taken alongside blood thinners such as aspirin or warfarin, but it works differently. If you take warfarin, tell your doctor before starting rosuvastatin, because your blood clotting tests may need checking more often.
Rosuvastatin reaches a similar intensity at lower doses, which is why its strengths are smaller numbers. That doesn't make it better for everyone. The right choice depends on your heart risk, other medicines and how you respond. See our atorvastatin and rosuvastatin comparison for more.
Price and buying
Yes. Rosuvastatin is registered in Malaysia and available on prescription under several brand names. At Hello Doktor, you can get Crestor in 5mg, 10mg and 20mg, and Vivacor and Surotin in 10mg and 20mg. Each is dispensed by a licensed Malaysian pharmacy and delivered to you.
At Hello Doktor, a box starts from RM39 for Surotin 10mg. Vivacor starts from RM59 and Crestor from RM89 for 5mg. Crestor boxes hold 28 tablets, as do Vivacor boxes, while Surotin boxes hold 30.

Crestor 5mg has RM10 off and Crestor 20mg has RM15 off when you buy 3 boxes of the same strength. Crestor 10mg has no 3-box saving. Vivacor and Surotin are already lower priced and have no extra bundle discount.
Delivery within Malaysia costs RM10, or free if you self-collect. Your medicine is sent from a licensed Malaysian pharmacy.
Strengths
Your doctor decides this with you. They look at your cholesterol results, your overall heart risk, your kidneys and any other medicines you take. Many people begin on a lower strength and adjust after a blood test.
Both are moderate-intensity doses. 5mg is the lowest strength and is often used as a starting dose, for example for people with kidney problems or a higher chance of muscle side effects. 10mg is a common standard starting dose. Your doctor chooses based on your cholesterol, heart risk and health, then checks your blood to see if a change is needed.
Yes. Rosuvastatin 20mg is a high-intensity dose, usually prescribed for people with established heart disease, a previous stroke, or very high heart risk where a lower LDL target is needed. Your doctor may start you on it, or increase to it from 10mg after a follow-up blood test.
Yes, if your doctor thinks you need it. They usually wait at least 4 weeks after you start, then check your blood before deciding. Some people move from 5mg to 10mg, or from 10mg to 20mg. Never change your dose yourself.
Only if your doctor or pharmacist tells you it's suitable for your tablets. Not all rosuvastatin tablets are made to be split, and splitting can give uneven doses. It's safer to get the exact strength you're prescribed, which is why 5mg, 10mg and 20mg are available as separate tablets.
Taking rosuvastatin
Any time that fits your day. Rosuvastatin stays active in the body long enough that morning or night both work. What matters most is taking it at roughly the same time each day.
Antacids that contain aluminium or magnesium can reduce how much rosuvastatin your body absorbs. Take your antacid at least 2 hours after your rosuvastatin.
Grapefruit juice is not known to affect rosuvastatin in a meaningful way. It's still worth asking your pharmacist about any foods or supplements you use often.
Rosuvastatin starts lowering cholesterol within the first couple of weeks, with most of its effect reached by about 4 weeks. Your doctor will usually recheck your cholesterol 4 to 12 weeks after you start or change dose. How much your levels change varies from person to person.
Yes. Doctors often add ezetimibe when rosuvastatin alone hasn't brought LDL cholesterol to the target set for you, or when a higher statin dose isn't suitable. The two medicines work in different ways and are commonly prescribed together. Only start ezetimibe if your doctor prescribes it.
Side effects and safety
The ones people mention most are headache, dizziness, constipation, feeling sick, tummy pain and aching muscles. They are often mild. Tell your doctor if any of them last or worry you.
Yes, muscle aches are one of the more common side effects, and are usually mild. Very rarely, statins cause serious muscle damage. Stop taking rosuvastatin and contact a doctor the same day if you have unexplained muscle pain, tenderness or weakness, especially with a fever, tiredness or dark urine.
Contact a doctor the same day if you have unexplained muscle pain or weakness, dark urine, yellowing of your skin or eyes, severe stomach pain, or a persistent cough with breathlessness. Call 999 or go to the nearest emergency department if you have swelling of your face, lips or tongue, difficulty breathing, or a widespread rash.
At higher strengths, rosuvastatin can sometimes cause a small amount of protein to show up in the urine. Your doctor may check your kidney function before and during treatment, especially if you have kidney problems already.
Yes, it's widely used in Malaysia. Some people of Asian heritage have higher blood levels of rosuvastatin at the same dose, so doctors often start with a lower strength and adjust from there.
Rosuvastatin isn't suitable if you're pregnant, trying to get pregnant or breastfeeding, or if you have active liver disease, severe kidney disease, or a past allergic reaction to it. It also can't be taken with ciclosporin. Tell your doctor if you take warfarin, gemfibrozil, fusidic acid, or medicines for HIV or hepatitis C, as these can interact.
Rosuvastatin can raise blood sugar slightly. In people already close to the diabetes range, this can lead to a diabetes diagnosis sooner. For most people at raised heart risk, doctors consider the heart benefit to outweigh this. Your doctor may check your blood sugar during treatment.
Weight gain isn't listed as a common side effect of rosuvastatin. If your weight changes while you're taking it, other factors such as diet, activity or other medicines are more likely causes. Mention any change you're worried about at your next review.
Drinking in moderation is usually fine. Heavy drinking raises the chance of liver problems and can make side effects more likely, so keep within recommended limits and tell your doctor if you drink regularly.
There isn't strong evidence that CoQ10 supplements prevent or treat statin muscle aches. They're generally considered low risk, but speak to your doctor or pharmacist before taking any supplement, so they can check it alongside your other medicines.
Please speak to your doctor first. Normal results often mean the medicine is doing its job, and cholesterol may rise again if you stop. Your doctor can review whether you still need it.
Brands
All three contain rosuvastatin. Crestor is the original brand, registered in Malaysia by AstraZeneca. Vivacor and Surotin are generics registered in Malaysia. They differ in maker, pack size and price.
Many people can, but check with your doctor or pharmacist first so they can confirm the same strength and update your records. Keep taking the medicine you have until then.
