Box sizes vary a lot with simvastatin, from 30 to 120 tablets. The cost per month, at one tablet a day, makes the brands easier to compare.
Your RM1 doctor consultation is part of every order. Delivery is RM10, or free if you self-collect. Monthly figures are rounded.
Simvastatin is a statin, one of the first to be widely prescribed. It has been used to manage cholesterol since the late 1980s, so doctors know it well.
It works on an enzyme in the liver that makes cholesterol. With less cholesterol being made, the liver takes more LDL out of your bloodstream, and less is left to collect in artery walls.
Simvastatin is short-acting. That's why it's usually taken in the evening, when your liver is busiest making cholesterol. Because it's broken down by the same liver pathway as some common medicines and grapefruit, your doctor will always check what else you take.
Every individual is different. Your doctor will advise what is suitable for you.
All three strengths come in both brands. Simvastatin is a moderate-strength statin, so the choice often depends as much on your other medicines as on your cholesterol.

Everyday dose
A familiar everyday dose. Many people who have been on simvastatin for years take 20mg each evening.
Highest used today
The highest strength usually prescribed now. It's used when your doctor wants more LDL lowering and your other medicines allow it.
Please don't change strength on your own. Every individual is different. Your doctor will advise what is suitable for you.
Zocor is the original simvastatin brand, registered in Malaysia by Organon. Simvor is a generic made in Malaysia by Ranbaxy. Each product sold here is registered with Malaysia's National Pharmaceutical Regulatory Agency (NPRA).

All three are statins. Simvastatin stands apart for its evening dosing, its longer list of interactions and its very low cost.

About simvastatin
Simvastatin is one of the longest-used statins. It's a prescription tablet that lowers LDL cholesterol by slowing cholesterol production in the liver. Doctors have prescribed it for decades, so there is a lot of experience with how people get on with it.
It's used to lower high LDL cholesterol and to reduce the chance of heart attack and stroke in people at raised risk. It can also lower triglycerides a little. Your doctor looks at your whole heart risk, not just one result, before suggesting it.
For many people, yes. It works well at moderate doses, costs little, and has a long safety record. Doctors may prefer a different statin if you need a bigger drop in LDL, or if you take medicines that clash with simvastatin.
Simvastatin is usually taken in the evening and has more interactions with other medicines and grapefruit. Atorvastatin can be taken at any time and reaches higher intensity. See how they compare on our atorvastatin page.
Price and buying
At Hello Doktor, Simvor starts from RM28 for a 30-tablet box of 40mg, and from RM36 for 100 tablets of 10mg. Zocor starts from RM232 for 60 tablets of 40mg. Zocor 10mg and 20mg come in boxes of 120 tablets, about four months' supply.
Two reasons. Zocor is the original brand, registered by Organon, and its 10mg and 20mg boxes hold 120 tablets, so one box lasts around four months. Looking at the cost per month gives a fairer comparison than the box price.
Zocor has RM30 off when you buy 3 boxes together. Simvor is already low priced and has no extra bundle discount.
Yes. It's a prescription medicine in Malaysia. If you don't have one, a licensed doctor can see you by video for RM1 and decide whether it suits you.
Delivery within Malaysia is RM10, or free if you self-collect. Orders are sent by a licensed Malaysian pharmacy.
Strengths
Your doctor decides with you, based on your cholesterol results, heart risk, kidney function and any other medicines. Some medicines cap the dose of simvastatin you can safely take, which is a big part of the choice.
40mg is a moderate-intensity dose and the highest strength most people are prescribed today. If more LDL lowering is needed, doctors usually switch to a stronger statin rather than go higher on simvastatin.
80mg carries a higher chance of muscle problems. Since 2011, guidance says it shouldn't be started in new patients. Only people who have taken it safely for a long time may stay on it, under their doctor's care.
Yes, if your doctor thinks it's needed. They usually check your blood about 4 to 12 weeks after a change. Please don't adjust the dose yourself.
Taking simvastatin
Your liver makes most of its cholesterol overnight, and simvastatin only stays active for a few hours. Taking it in the evening lines it up with that peak. If evenings don't suit you, ask your doctor about other options.
It's best to avoid grapefruit and grapefruit juice. Grapefruit can raise the amount of simvastatin in your blood, which makes muscle side effects more likely. Pomelo, a close relative common in Malaysia, may have a similar effect, so ask your pharmacist.
If you remember the same evening, take it then. If it's already the next day, skip the missed tablet and take your next dose as usual. Don't take two at once.
Some antibiotics such as clarithromycin and erythromycin, some antifungals, and some HIV and hepatitis C medicines can't be taken with it. Amlodipine, diltiazem, verapamil and amiodarone mean a lower maximum dose. Always tell your doctor and pharmacist everything you take.
Cholesterol starts to fall within a couple of weeks, and the full effect is usually seen after about 4 weeks. Your doctor will normally recheck your blood after that. Results vary from person to person.
Side effects and safety
The ones mentioned most are headache, tummy discomfort, constipation, wind and feeling sick. Muscle aches can happen too. Most are mild. Tell your doctor if they don't settle.
Yes. The chance goes up with higher doses, grapefruit and certain other medicines. Rarely, statins cause serious muscle damage. Stop and contact a doctor the same day if you have unexplained muscle pain, tenderness or weakness, especially with fever or dark urine.
It isn't suitable during pregnancy, when planning a pregnancy, or while breastfeeding, or for people with active liver disease. It also can't be taken with some antibiotics, antifungals, HIV medicines, ciclosporin, gemfibrozil or danazol. Your doctor will check your medicines first.
A small amount is usually fine. Heavy drinking puts extra strain on the liver, so keep within recommended limits and tell your doctor if you drink regularly.
Please talk to your doctor first. A normal result often means the tablet is working, and cholesterol usually rises again once you stop.
Brands
Both contain simvastatin. Zocor is the original brand, registered by Organon. Simvor is a generic made in Malaysia by Ranbaxy. They differ in pack size and price.
Many people can. Check with your doctor or pharmacist first so they can confirm the matching strength. Keep taking your current tablets until then.
