Erections are perfectly normal for a man to experience in his lifetime. They commonly happen with the help of some arousal or stimulant, but others might happen without any reason (without any warning signs too!). You would think that adolescent boys would be the ones with the most questions, lo and behold, even some older ones are clueless as to why they “pitch the tent” for no reason. Read on for a truly revealing discovery.

What is an erection?

You might have come across a number of slang terms such as chubby, hard-on, boner, or stiffy. You’ve guessed it, all of them refer to an erection (let us know if you know others). An erection takes place when the penis elongates and becomes larger in size as it receives extra flow of blood. It may last for just a few of minutes or longer depending on the stimulation it receives.

Why do men get erections?

Throughout the day (most of it, at least), the penis is in a limp state. Erections can happen for a number of reasons but are usually caused by some sort of sexual arousing, either mentally, physically or visually. Young men who begin to experience erections during puberty are considered to have checked an important box in their overall sexual development. During this period, they may experience erections in their sleep, which could lead to what is commonly known as a “wet dream”. A “wet dream” is when ejaculation takes place while a young man is asleep, something which is also completely normal as it signifies the coming of age for a boy.

What can I do to stop an erection?

You may experience an erection when you least expect it. The consumption of coffee, for instance, is believed to speed up the circulation of blood in the body, thus creating a state of erection when consumed too much (some even say food affects erections). Whatever the circumstances, rest assured that the muscles controlling your penis seem to be functioning well and you are experiencing a healthy sexual development, or if you’re older, it means that you are still capable. If an erection does catch you by surprise, perhaps try distracting yourself from the current situation (because you’ll never know what turns you on) and shift your focus elsewhere. Take a walk if needed. Excuse yourself if you are with company, adjust your pants or use your lower parts of your shirt to cover the erection. If nothing can keep it down, hurry to a restroom to calm yourself down.

What if I have difficulty maintaining an erection?

While it is completely normal to get a planned or unplanned erection, it is also normal to be unable to hold an erection, however you should be a little concerned. As there are numerous ways for you to get an erection, there are several reasons why you should go limp too. This can especially be troubling for men during intercourse with a partner. Feeling self-conscious, stressed, distracted and bogged down with fatigue are all recognised as causes for temporary loss of erection. Don’t get too caught up with it as it is also a natural occurrence.

If you can get an erection while masturbating but have difficulty maintaining it with a partner, your problems may be more psychological in nature. Should this happens to you with a new partner, give it some time to get used to each other and you should be able to get it up for longer once you become comfortable. Perhaps speak about the problem with your partner, it should be able to loosen you up. If you’re not comfortable talking about the problem with your partner, it could mean that you’re not quite ready to have sex. At this point, it would be best to speak to a counselor to figure out the root of the problem.

Besides those mentioned above, there are other factors which could be causing you to fail at maintaining an erection. Alcohol and drugs are widely known to reduce one’s ability to last longer in bed, let alone maintain erection. Other than just affecting your ability to keep it up, these habits also put you at greater risk of unplanned pregnancies as well as sexually transmitted diseases (STDs).

Is it safe to use erectile dysfunction medication?

Erectile dysfunction (ED) or impotence is a very common condition among older men. Albeit being able to reproduce at any age, men tend to develop this condition later on in life. Doctors would recommend using Viagra to treat it, but it is hardly prescribed to younger men. If not prescribed by doctors, use of erectile dysfunction medication to boost intercourse experience can lead to irreversible effects. Research has revealed that use of these medications, especially under the influence of alcohol or drugs, can alter a man’s mental state and compel him to indulge in risky sexual activities, inadvertently contributing to the numbers of unplanned pregnancies and/or STDs. There are other ways of treating ED and you should be aware of what they are.

In conclusion, there is no real worry if you can’t seem to control an erection. As the saying goes, simply let nature take its course. One thing’s for sure though, if it happens, you’ll know for sure that the muscles around your penis seem to be working just fine. If you however find yourself not being able to maintain an erection, do keep an eye out for the possible risk factors. And if you still find yourself lost, speak to a close family doctor or psychiatrist to get hold of a definitive conclusion to the problem. Otherwise, we find no reason to put it down (pun totally intended).
