Mosquitoes are not just annoying with the way they fly around and whine in your ear before landing on your skin to bother you with itchiness; they are also the culprit of many diseases from which millions of people have to suffer each year. Knowing how to choose the proper repellent to prevent mosquito bites is, therefore, very helpful.

Mosquito’s CO2 Receptors

Have you ever noticed that it seems like mosquitoes only target some certain persons in a group? In fact, mosquitoes can actually feel your presence even from a far distance. Your body gives off a certain amount of carbon dioxide (CO2) when you exhale and through your skin, and mosquitoes find the carbon dioxide, the humidity, and the warmth that your body emits just to their liking. Plus, even some types of chemicals in your sweat attract mosquitoes’ attention.

Mosquito repellents basically exert their effect by blocking the chemical cues that attract mosquitoes. There are various active ingredients usually used in mosquito repellents. When you are about to buy one, you should consider how long the repellent may last and how effective it is in repelling one or more species of mosquito.

DEET

DEET is probably one of the oldest and indeed one of the most effective repellents. It has been staying around for more than 60 years. DEET has an excellent ability to repel all species of mosquito, and protect users from ticks, gnat, chiggers, etc. You can apply DEET directly onto your exposed skin, only once a day. You ought not to apply DEET under clothes because it can cause irritation. Do not let it get to the eye. However, you may get a greasy feel when using DEET

Picaridin

Picaridin, a new brand, is effective in repelling mosquitoes that carry malaria. Picaridin, not like DEET, has neither smell nor a greasy feel. It does not damage clothing or plastics, either.

PMD

PMD is the natural substance that is synthesised from the oil of lemon eucalyptus. Researchers find PMD very effective in repelling West-Nile-virus-carrying mosquitoes. PMD can work as efficaciously as DEET and safe for us to use.

Other Strategies

There are other ways you can try to repel mosquitoes:

  • Citronella candles
  • Ultrasonic mosquito repellent devices
  • Eliminating standing water
