Breast Cancer: An Uncomfortable Bra Could Be a Sign

By Medically reviewed by Hello Doktor Medical Panel

Did you know that 1 out of every 20 women in Malaysia today is at a high-risk of getting breast cancer? This is a worrying statistic. It is largely due to the fact that Malaysian women choose not to undergo screening out of fear or ignorance (pick the poison). In actual fact, periodic check-ups with a doctor allows for early detection, enabling women with breast cancer to get the necessary treatment before it’s too late.

You may not know this already, but there are a few visibly indicative signs of breast cancer, including an uncomfortable bra. And a woman can identify these signs herself before heading to the doctor for affirmation.

Developing lumps or swellings on breasts

One of the simplest ways to detect breast cancer in its early stages is to feel around the area of the breast for a lump or swelling, massaging slightly around the outer areas of the breast to identify any abnormalities previously unidentified. However, it is important to note that not all lumps or swellings around the breast are cancerous in nature.

Using the same action, do also identify if the lump or swelling is painful when rubbing. If yes, then it could indicate a sign of breast cancer. Ultimately, seeking medical consultation from a doctor is the best way to know for sure.

Is being uncomfortable when using a bra a sign of breast cancer?

For women, the use of a bra for breast support is of the utmost importance. While some women are of the notion that the use of either an overly-tight bra or a push-up bra can cause cancer, we’re here to tell you that it is purely a MYTH and boasts no factual evidence whatsoever.

For women who don’t know, using a tight bra has zero relation to the risk of a woman being affected by breast cancer. But that’s not to say that a woman’s comfort when using a bra has no relation to the cancer. What we mean by this is that every time you put on a bra, be wary if you’re uncomfortable, as this could very well be an indication of breast cancer.

Here are a few scenarios of being uncomfortable while wearing a bra:

  •         Breast popping out from the top, bottom or side of the bra
  •         The wires of the bra starting to poke the bottom area of your breasts
  •         The strap of the bra falling off your shoulder often
  •         The cup of the bra starting to wrinkle
  •         The front area of the bra not directly cupping your breasts
  •         The bra moving easily when you move your arms

While these can be perceived as wrongful choices when purchasing bras, it can also be a sign of breast cancer. Therefore, always pay attention to any slight changes you may feel around your breasts at any given time.

So, what should you do?

Primarily, focus should be given towards constant breast checks. This is a simple action, which can be done 7 to 10 days after your period. If you have not experienced your period yet, or are experiencing irregular periods, then it’s best to stick to a fixed day, like the first day of the month for example.

That said, a yearly check-up with your doctor is mandatory. Especially so if you are a woman over the age of 40, in which case a mammogram is necessary at least once a year. Most importantly as a woman, ignorance or fear of knowing has to be avoided. As the saying goes, prevention is better than cure. And curing is much easier to do with early detection.
