Food allergy is known as an allergic reaction happening when a certain food is seen as a harmful factor by the body’s immune system. Foods that trigger an allergic condition are called allergens. In some research, there is a 4-6% of children and about 6% of adult affected by food allergy. At children and babies, this condition usually occurs more common.
Types of food allergy
There are two types of food allergy:
- IgE mediated. Allergic symptoms happen associated with the releasing of IgE antibodies from the body’s immune system. These antibodies just have reactions with a certain food.
- Non-IgE mediated. This condition occurs when other parts of the body’s immune system react to a certain food. This type of food allergy does not make the body triggering IgE antibodies.
Symptoms of food allergy
When children have a food allergy, the symptoms are often seen on the skin, the cardiovascular system, the gastrointestinal system, and the respiratory tract. Most common symptoms are:
- Vomiting, diarrhea or stomach cramps, and pain;
- Eczema or hives;
- Swelling of the tongue, lips, throat or itching in the mouth which can affect the ability of talking or breathing;
- Tightening throat, trouble breathing;
- Weak purse may lead to the drop in blood pressure;
- The skin may turn to be pale or blue;
- This reaction usually happens in more than one part of the body and can turn to be worse fast. When it happens, patients should be treated properly because it can lead to death.
Foods that are usually seen as an allergen
In children, any types of food can become the causes of allergy. However, these following allergens account for 90% of all food allergy reactions in children.
- Tree nuts;
The main treatment of food allergy is to avoid foods that cause the reaction. Remember to read carefully the label on any food products to define clearly its ingredients. This can minimize the ability of eating food involving the allergen.
