Reasons for Recommended Pregnancy Termination

Getting a pregnancy termination is usually a choice that attracts strong opinions and judgments. However, pregnancy termination can be recommended when medical issues are involved. The most common reasons that make doctors recommend an abortion are an impending miscarriage, birth defects, and the mother’s health conditions.

Impending miscarriage

Miscarriage, also known as spontaneous abortion, refers to the loss of the fetus during the first 15 weeks of pregnancy. 20% of pregnancies are reported to end in miscarriage. Impending miscarriage is determined due to the lack of fetal heartbeat when examined by ultrasound. That is when the doctor will recommend the mother to have a therapeutic abortion to avoid physical risks and complications of an actual miscarriage such as hemorrhage and infertility.

Birth defects

Thanks to medical developments, we can detect birth defects early on the first-trimester, using ultrasound, blood tests, and amniocentesis. Some conditions of birth defects are classified as incompatible with life, while others are not, which means in some cases, the child can still grow up. Nevertheless, children with birth defects have to carry serious health conditions with them all their lives. As difficult as the choice is, some women may have to go for abortion to avoid the child’s suffering.

The health of the mother

Some women may suffer from medical conditions that complicate the pregnancy, including heart disease, cancer, diabetes, etc. In these cases, therapeutic abortions are recommended to preserve the woman’s health. In addition, when the pregnancy is the result of rape, incest or an abusive relationship, abortion is medically justified to protect the woman.

Regardless of the causes and methods, abortion will always be a painful experience for a woman, both mentally and physically. So if you are considering abortion for whatever reason, make sure to take counsel with an expert to choose what is best for you.
