How Does Authoritative Parenting Affect Children

According to psychologist Diana Baumrind, there are four parenting styles: authoritarian, authoritative, permissive, and lastly, uninvolved or neglectful. In authoritative parenting, children receive firm and loving limits from their parents. Knowing clearly the influence that the authoritative parenting has on your children can help you have an insight into how this parenting style can benefit your children.

    Independence

Authoritative parents look for ways to raise their child’s autonomy through reasonable discipline and discipline which concentrates on a specific issue. This does not mean that your preschooler must always be in charge. This, however, does mean that you supply your kids with a balance of independence and responsibility. Alternatives are what the parent offers – “You can sit and be quite in course of library’s story time or we can leave” – children are permitted to make a decision, shoulder responsibility for what they do and accept the outcome of their behavior. Thanks to this independence, the child can obtain an attitude of affection, care and helpfulness.

    Self-esteem

Your kid may not appear to have low self-esteem, but it is essential to establish the foundation for a fine sense of self. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, parents give children ample chances of developing a healthy sense of self by making their children feel safe and think they have power in their decision-making. Offering an atmosphere of warmth and care is one of the major principles of the authoritative parenting. That these parents discipline does not mean that they are supercilious or disciplinary. Rather, it shows that these parents are responsive and thoughtful. Between parent and child can therefore grow a secure attachment, which in turn provides your child a sense of belonging and high self-esteem.

    Respect

Respect is something to be demanded and valued. By not making arbitrary as well as impractical rules, the authoritative parents, it is revealed that, set up their children for success. Considerate, age-appropriate rules are what authoritative parents possess. They also have reasonable expectations of their kids which they are more than willing to explain to them. This reflection promotes an attitude of self-respect in children and a great respect for parents.

    Maturity

Staying around an uncontrollable toddler or preschooler is one of the worst things. There is good news here. Authoritative parents’ children have a strong ability to control themselves and have their behavior regulated. These children grow high responsibility and self-discipline due to their authoritative parents’ rule enforcement and instead of allowing the children to  do whatever they want.  As the children of authoritative parents have a tendency to possess a healthy self-esteem, they are resilient and tough. Therefore, when they enter the age of teenager, they are less likely to make use of drugs or alcohol or involve in defiant behavior.
