Penile fracture or broken penis syndrome is the injury that directly affects the Tunica albuginea. Tunica albuginea is a membrane that envelopes and protects the corpora cavernous (a chamber filled with blood during the erection) that helps to maintain the penis’s rigidity. The penile fracture happens when the tunica albuginea is torn and may cause bleeding or hematoma at the affected area. To prevent this injury, men should understand about it and have the required protective and preventives strategy.

Causes and risk factors of penile fracture

Broken penis syndrome results from the damage of tunica albuginea caused by the accidental severe bending, or trauma. This condition normally happen during the assertive acts of intercourse when the female partner is on top or the male’s thrusting is so vigorous. An aggressive masturbation can also be the cause of broken penis. In some cases, intense and dangerous activities and postures can also lacerate the tissue of the erected penis leading to penile fracture.

Taqaandan, a practice used to detect the presence of the erection has been revealed to cause penile fracture. In this practice, the head part of the penis is bent while the shaft is erected. You will hear and feel a click, which is supposed to be painless and very much alike the cracking of the knuckles.

Genital skin loss, which results from a combination of traumatic and infectious processes, can also lead to penile fracture. Additionally, some other injuries at the genital area can increase the risk of getting penile fracture, including burn, human or animal bites, gunshot, stab wound, etc.

Symptoms and health risks of penile fracture

Normally, a penile fracture comes along with a loud popping or cracking sound and the sudden, severe pain at the genitalia. Some other signs of this condition include:

  • Loss of erection, swelling, bruise,
  • Rolling sign. A firm, stiff, and palpable hematoma when the blood leaks out and builds up in the tunica albuginea.
  • Eggplant deformity. The appearance of the broken penis looks like an eggplant where it is swelled, curved, bruised, and angled off towards the other side of the penis.
  • The swelling and hematoma spreading to the scrotum, perineum, and suprapubic region.

The penile fracture or broken penis syndrome, if left untreated may lead to the scarring of the tissue lying under the genital skin. This can cause erectile dysfunction and the Peyronie’s disease, in which the penis become bent during the erection. This condition can cause severe discomfort during sex or make it impossible to penetrate. When getting serious, it requires the corrective surgery for treatment.

Prevention of the penile fracture

To prevent this dangerous condition, it is important to improve the overall penis health and avoid injuries during daily activities. During sexual intercourse, it is advisable to take caution with the extreme bending or side to side motion and keep the penis skin well-lubricated, especially for the positions when the partner is on top.
