There are a lot of things that can turn your life sexless. A painful breakup, health problems, or stress from life and work may take sex away. When you are exhausted from work, or when you are emotionally unstable, it’s understandable sex falls down to the bottom of your priority list. While you don’t need sex to stay alive, cutting back on it may rob yours from awesome benefits. Here’s how not having sex may take a toll on your physical and emotional well-being. Perhaps, those health impacts are enough to convince you to have sex regularly again.

Fewer endorphins

Arousal and orgasm may trigger the release of endorphins – hormones that make you feel good. Endorphins are known to be effective in relieving pain and boosting mood. Stop having sex is just like stop working out. Once it ends, you will no longer have the high that comes with it.  If you want the high back, you need to get down to business.

More stress

A study looked at the daily stress levels of female college students and their sexual activity within a few months before an important exam. Those who had less sex experienced higher levels of stress. It’s true that there are other ways to de-stress. However, the correlation between decreased sexual activity and increased stress is still concerning. Stress and sex form a vicious circle as the more stress you have, the less appealing you find sex to be, which will make you end up with even more stress.

Decreased relationship satisfaction

Sex is an indispensable part of a romantic relationship. It acts like an invisible glue keeping the couple together. As a couple starts to have less sex, their satisfaction with their own relationship starts to drop. The key probably lies in the hormone oxytocin, which is commonly known as the hormone of love. Oxytocin is released during orgasm. It creates a sense of trust and bonding between the two partners, making them see each other in a more positive way.

Negative self-judgment and damaged self-esteem

To your surprise, abstinence from sex may interfere with the way your perceive yourself. Although the absence of sex will neither physically affect your body nor cause diseases, it has a huge influence on your self-judgement and self-confidence. The emotional challenges caused by this can lead to anxiety, which may affect your relationships with others.

Erectile dysfunction

In men, sexual abstinence may pose as a precursor to sexual disorders such as erectile dysfunction. A study found that men who reported having sexual intercourse once per week were half as likely to experience erectile dysfunction when compared with men who had sex less frequently. Erectile dysfunction may result in serious problems with relationships. It makes men have even less sex and may avoid getting involved in a romantic relationship.
