There are a lot of things that can turn your life sexless. A painful breakup, health problems, or stress from life and work may take sex away. When you are exhausted from work, or when you are emotionally unstable, it’s understandable sex falls down to the bottom of your priority list. While you don’t need sex to stay alive, cutting back on it may rob yours from awesome benefits. Here’s how not having sex may take a toll on your physical and emotional well-being. Perhaps, those health impacts are enough to convince you to have sex regularly again.

A loose vagina

In women, regular vaginal sexual activity, either with someone or by oneself, encourages vaginal health. From midlife on, sex is extremely important to women because the hormonal changes during this time are likely to cause dryness and decreased elasticity. Sex keeps a steady blood supply to the vaginal, protecting it from the loss of muscle tone and stretchiness. This works just like the relationship between sex and erectile dysfunction. The more sex you have, the better your vagina is, and vice versa.

Less lubrication

It’s hard to be sexually aroused without the intimate wetness down there. The thrill from sex trigger the glands in charge of producing secretions that work as a natural lubrication for the vagina. The lack of sexual stimulus will make a woman more prone to dryness, which makes sex hurt. Although vaginal dryness may be caused by loads of reasons, staying sexually active does a good job at lowering your risk of getting it.

Bad moods

Research suggests a link between a low level of sexual activity and negative moods. When you are depressed, you probably don’t want to have sex. As sex gives you a special kind of rush that you can never get from any other activity, the change from being sexually active to sexually sedentary can definitely give you the blues. If you have had plenty of blues lately, maybe it’s time to have some fun once again.

Fewer heart-health benefits

This is another vicious circle. While frequent sex benefits your heart, if you have heart problems, you may also have problems with arousal and sexual function, which eventually stopping you from having sex. A study published in the American Journal of Cardiology in 2010 has established an association between low frequency of sexual activity and an increased risk of cardiovascular disease. Although these kinds of studies don’t prove the protective property of sex against, they made a good point regarding how sex can help people have better heart health.

Lower immune function

As sex floods your body with pleasure, lifting up the burden from stress and providing a sense of comfort and security, it also improves your immune function. Studies have shown how stress can be detrimental to one’s immune system. Therefore, it’s reasonable to say sex is effective in helping the body fight off illnesses. The lack of sex doesn’t give you illnesses. It just increases your chance of getting diseases. No sex means no immune benefits, which may potentially put you at risk of many diseases.

Decreased sex drive

While many people believe that having less sex makes you crave for sex more, things actually don’t work that way. When it comes to sex drive, it’s a “use it or lose it” situation. There is some science to back up this claim. As mentioned above, having less sex may give you vaginal dryness or erectile dysfunction, both of which make it harder for you to get sexually excited. The less sex you have, the more you get used to not having it and even not thinking about it. No wonder your sex drive gets hurt.
