    Beating the afternoon slump

We have all been there: having a super-productive morning, sending all the emails and checking all the boxes in our to-do list, then rolls around 2 pm and we are all drained. The afternoon slump is an office job hallmark and it is the worst!

With only a few more hours before work’s over, you might feel like giving up mentally. Here are a few things to fight that afternoon slump.

    Walk around

Get out of your chair and take 15 minutes going around the office to chit chat. It’s alright to spend 15 minutes not working if the next 45 minutes you can be super-productive. Forcing yourself to be active (or as active as possible) can actually combat fatigue. Just be sure to stay on track and not lollygagging around too much.

    Brainstorm ideas

If your brain is shutting down, it’s time to wake up by making your brain do some work! You can make a check list of what you need to do on Monday back at the office, or add a few items to your bucket list. There are many tools to help you keep track of your to-do list, try Evernote, Springpad, Google Docs, or Bucketlistly for example.

    Try something sour

The “zap” coming from the sour taste can definitely wake you up from your hazy daze. Simply the smell coming from a lemon or orange can make you feel refresh and energized. Research on aromatherapy shows that just a whiff of the crisp scent may give us the mental stimulation and mood boost we so desperately need in the middle of the afternoon.

    Adjust your posture

The afternoon slump often comes with a slumped posture. Plus, you may not realize it, but sitting at your desk for 8+ hours a day can do more than tire your eyes, fingers, and back – it can actually misalign your spine and lead to high blood pressure. Straighten up your spine with some yoga at your desk can also relax your muscle. Research shows that straightening your posture can help give you an energy boost and even pump up your confidence.

    Have a snack

The best and fastest way to regain energy is to eat. Have a snack to help boost energy levels. Try a handful of nuts or a candy to give yourself some sugar. While not everyone is a big fan of dark chocolate, it does have some unique advantages. Dark chocolate has high levels of healthy fat and antioxidants, as well as fiber and magnesium. Not to mention, it provides a little caffeine.

    Clean up

While a messy desk often says you’re working hard, looking at all the cluster can inhibit your creative flow. Albert Einstein once said, “If a cluttered desk is a sign of a cluttered mind, of what, then, is an empty desk a sign?”. Get rid of the things that you don’t need anymore. An organized desk creates structure environments to suit our goals and help use more effectively achieve those goals.
