Putting Mobile Phone In The Pocket Can Reduce Male Fertility

Researchers at the Cleveland Clinic believe the use of cell phones with hands-free devices may harm men’s fertility if the cell phones are close to their testicles.

It’s common for men to keep their cell phones in their pants pockets while using hands-free devices to talk. This exposes the testicles to radiofrequency electromagnetic waves, which is harmful. The commonly use of bluetooth devices are also concerning.

How radiation from cell phones affects male fertility

Researchers studied semen samples collected from 32 men. They divided each man’s sample into two parts. Half of the semen samples were put 2.5 centimeters away from a cell phone with 850 MHz frequency radiation in talk mode for an hour. The frequency was chosen based on the normal range of radiation emitted from the common cell phones manufactured in the U.S., which is from 850 to 900 MHz. The 2.5 cm distance reflects the distance between the testicles and the cell phone put inside the pants pocket.

While the previous study conducted by this group has already established a link between cell phone radiofrequency electromagnetic waves and impaired sperm quality, the new study explains the reason. Exposure to radiofrequency electromagnetic waves may result in higher levels of damaging free radicals, lower sperm motility and viability. Oxidative stress is another concerning issue. The differences in DNA damage between the exposed and unexposed subjects are insignificant, though.

Further research is necessary to confirm the findings and determine if the negative effects occur at a longer distance, and if phones on silent or standby modes can emit the same harmful radiation.

What should men do to protect their fertility

It’s advisable to keep your cell phone as far from your testicles as possible. Experts believe men who talk for 3-4 hours a day with their cell phones in their pockets are at a high risk of infertility. Besides, cell phones are not the only things that should be away from your testicles. The heat produced by latop batteries are also concerning. Also, be aware of the possible damages caused by jacuzzis, tub baths, toxins, and fumes.

Sperm damage caused by oxidative stress may be reversed with antioxidants such as vitamins C and E. Men with fertility problems are recommended to take antioxidants even if there are no sign of abnormalities in their sperm.

It’s also important to properly interpret the findings. As fascinating as these findings are, the body of scientific evidence is not sufficient to establish a cause-and-effect relationship between wireless usage and adverse health effects. Therefore, scientists have to keep looking into this issue.
