The Importance of Drinking Water for Healthy Skin

Since water plays a crucial role in digestion, blood circulation, absorption, and excretion, it is of vital importance that we should drink a sufficient amount of water every day to remain good functioning of the body. But is drinking water good for skin health as well? If yes, what are those wonders?

Negative effects of dehydration on your skin

It is evident that our skin, like other organs of the body, is composed of cells. And skin cells, like other cells, are composed of water. Every organ needs water to function at their best. Should your body not absorb enough water, the blood will pull water from skin cells. As a result, the skin will become dry, tight, and flaky if getting dehydrated.  Dry skin is known to be less flexible and elastic, and wrinkles are therefore more likely to form.  If your body is dehydrated for a long time, your skin will age faster.

It is unfortunate that when water is taken into your body, it will reach other organs before reaching your skin. Thus, you should consume enough water so that your skin can have some to store. Once water is kept there, it will improve your skin and help you avoid wrinkles.

How to give extra care to your skin

Apply a moisturizer within 2 minutes of leaving the bath or shower. This is needed because after taking a bath or shower is when your skin has better absorption of personal-care products.

Opt for products that contain hyaluronic acid prior to your moisturizer. Some types of this product include Skinceuticals Hydrating B5 Gel.

    How much to drink?

It is suggested that 6 to 8 glasses of water a day, each glass is about 240ml, is adequate because this amount can help purge toxins from your body as well as your skin. A way to know if your body has taken in sufficient amount of water is to check your urine color. Pale yellow signifies healthy and hydrated condition. If it’s yellow, your body needs more water intake. If it’s clear, you may have drunk too much water, which should also be avoided since it makes your kidney work too much.
