Ways to Express Gratitude

Stress is a normal part of life. As human beings, we all experience stress at least once in a while. Since we are not able to avoid stress, we can learn how to deal will it through gratitude for everything. Gratitude refers to the state of being thankful for the things that happen to your life, no matter how small it could be. Cultivating a habit of gratitude as a way of coping with stress will help you stave off negative feelings, relieve your distress and enhance your life quality.

Science has shown that you can adopt a habit by consistently practicing it for 21 days, which means if you are not born with gratitude, you still can turn it into your habit. The only way to make it a habit is practicing. Here are some tips to help you practice building the gratitude you need to fight stress as well as other hardships in your life:

Make a list

Every night before you go to sleep, take out a piece of paper and a pen, think about what happened in your day. Try to come up with three things that you feel thankful for, things that you might have taken for granted for a long time. Even smallest things like the quiet of the night or the fresh breeze of the morning counts. You can also try to think about what would you do if you lost your precious things like a hand or a leg, even a home. How awful would it be? And how thankful you would be when you got them back.

Write a letter

In your life, there is probably someone that had a good influence on you, someone that made you who you are today. Did you thank them? If not, write a letter to them. In your letter, tell them how they helped you, and how grateful you are for what they did. You might consider taking it further by mailing the letter to the addressed person, or visit them and tell them by yourself.

Remind yourself

It may be really hard to keep the habit of gratitude, especially if you have a busy lifestyle when everything seems to be more important than saying “thank you”. That is why you need constant reminders of being grateful. Put a small thank you note at your desk or several others around your house. Habits are made with repetition. By doing this, you will never forget to be thankful all day long.

Gratitude can be hard at first. But when you are used to it and it has become a habit, you will be surprised at how many little things can make you feel grateful, as well as how it eases the stress that life has put on you. You will able to notice pleasant little things even in the terrible days.
