According to the International Diabetes Federation (IDF), type 2 diabetes, a condition that used to be prevalent in older adults, has become popular in younger people due to modern lifestyles. Fortunately, type 2 diabetes can be prevented. Here is what you need to do to prevent or delay its onset, no matter how old you are.
A new disease in the young
Type 2 diabetes is usually diagnosed in middle-aged and elder people. However, a disease that was once called “adult-onset” has spread to younger people, even children. While a few kids are born with type 1 diabetes, some other acquire type 2 diabetes from their poor lifestyle habits.
Onset age of diabetes
A 2012 study published in Diabetes Care found that, at current rates, the number of type 2 diabetes patients under 20 years old could increase by up to 49 percent by 2050.
What triggers diabetes?
Both lifestyle and health issues may contribute to the rise of type 2 diabetes. Though unhealthy lifestyles are still the most common factors triggering diabetes, other elements that can increase your risk include obesity, vascular disease, family history, gestational diabetes, high cholesterol, and polycystic ovarian syndrome.
Being diagnosed with prediabetes is also a serious warning. Prediabetes occurs when your blood sugar levels rise, yet not high enough to become type 2 diabetes. If you have prediabetes, it is advisable to take preventive measures.
Diabetes is a condition that may be prevented or delayed with a healthy diet and suitable exercise routine. The onset can be delayed by taking certain medications. It is important to discuss all of your options with a doctor for the best results. No matter what your age is, taking steps now can always prevent related complications and improve your quality of life.
