What Is an Allergic Reaction to Food?

Food allergy is a reaction of the body to one or more kinds of food. The symptoms, clinical symptoms appear after eating. Food allergies are the result of a chain reaction of the immune system, including the combination of antigens and antibodies.

There are 2 categories of the adverse reactions of the body to food.

Adverse reaction of the body through intermediaries immunity

The first type is the adverse reaction of the body through intermediaries immunity. Protein ingredients in foods is the most common allergen. Allergies occur when the immune system of the body mistakenly identified a protein as a harmful substance. It considers that the body is under attack so it sends white blood cells to protect and cause allergic reactions. The immune system produces antibodies called immunoglobulin antibody E (IgE) to neutralize the allergen. IgE antibodies perceive and act on the immune system to release histamine. It can cause a variety of signs and symptoms of allergies including a runny nose, rash, urticaria, nausea, and even an anaphylactic shock.

Food intolerance

The second type is the food intolerance. The reaction of this kind includes any adverse response to food or food supplements without being mediated by the immune system. However, the symptoms of this type may also be the same as the type of food allergy. Intolerance usually occurs in common foods that contain lactose Basically, your body decides what foods may cause harmful and cause allergic reactions in self-defense. Allergies to foods most linked to the protein in cow’s milk, eggs, peanuts, sesame, soy, wheat, hard nuts, seafood, etc… In addition, colorings, preservatives, additives during processing may also be factors that cause allergies.

The common symptoms of food allergies

Rash

The rash is a common symptom of all the food allergies. The rash is usually very itchy rash breakouts. They grow on each array or spread into larger areas of the body.

Skin redness or swelling

Allergies often cause skin redness or swelling, especially around the lips or areas on the face. Seafood and eggs are the allergens that sometimes cause symptoms like this.

Allergic rhinitis

Rhinitis is also a common symptom of allergies to dairy products.

Eczema

Eczema is also called atopic dermatitis. It makes infected people feel very itchy and painful. Moreover, scaly rash usually grows near the face, elbows, and knees. Eczema is a common symptom of allergies to milk, eggs, fish, and flour.

Digestive disorders

Diarrhea, vomiting, and constipation sometimes a manifestation of food allergy, especially with dairy products. But, they can also be the signs of the physical condition of food intolerance. Lactose intolerance and gluten intolerance are the two conditions that are not adapted as quite common cause of these symptoms.

Acute urticaria

Acute urticaria (or shocks – contact anaphylaxis) is the most severe allergic reactions throughout the body. It causes difficulty in breathing due to airway swelling and a sudden drop in blood pressure due to blood vessel walls expansion.

Some drugs can be used to prevent, mitigate or treat allergic reactions. Food allergies, especially for young people, is a important public health issue. Therefore, people with allergies should avoid contact with food protein allergens.
