Female infertility is one of the most concerning problems for women and couple. This condition can be attributed to many health issues. It is important that we understand some of the causes so that we can find accurate approaches to deal with them.

Breaking down female infertility

It takes two to get pregnant and while it is true that male factors are also at play, ultimately, women are the one with the womb. That said, it is important that couples understand how female infertility happens and how it can be effectively managed. Below are some of the main causes of female infertility:

Disorders in ovulation

This condition happens when you have a problem with your periodic cycle. It gets longer or shorter than normal and is not stable, maybe worse that there is no ovulation. 25% of women suffer from this. Many factors attribute to this problem.

  1. Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS): This is an ovulatory dysfunction growing from the ovary, which leads to hormone imbalance. The symptoms are complicated and appear differently on each person. It can be a lack of ovulation, abnormal menstrual cycle, excessive weight gain, acne, unusual facial hair, and infertility.
  2. Hypothalamic dysfunction: This condition is a type of ovulation abnormality caused by emotional stress, being overweight or underweight, or a recent considerable weight gain or loss.
  3. Premature ovarian insufficiency: This condition causes an inadequate number of eggs in the ovary due to the mistaken attack of the body against ovarian tissues or to genetic problems.
  4. A high amount of prolactin: Oversufficiency of prolactin (hyperprolactinemia) produced by the pituitary gland reduces the amount of estrogen, which can lead to female infertility.

Endometriosis

This is a type of chronic condition of the reproductive system that prevents the meeting between the sperm and egg, which hinders the normal route of fertilized egg to the fallopian tubes because of the peculiar growth of the cells from the endometrium. This disease causes pain during periods and intercourse. However, this problem can be resolved by surgery.

Fallopian tube damage

The blockage of fallopian tubes prevents sperm and eggs from coming in contact, thus increasing the probability of infertility. There are several factors behind this problem, including:

Uterine or cervical causes

The occurrence of uterine or cervical irregularities augment the possibility of miscarriage. This condition stems from certain factors, such as:

These days, the advancement in the field of reproductive health has allowed couples to still conceive despite facing the above problems. If you are struggling with reproductive health issues, be sure to consult your fertility specialist and undergo adequate screening and treatment.
