Botox or botulinum toxin, the drug derived from the bacterium Clostridium botulinum, has been used by doctors and specialists for a long time. For medical uses, botox can help treat certain types of muscular conditions while for cosmetical uses, it helps treat wrinkles and facial creases. This article will give you a closer and detailed look at the mechanism and sides effects of using botox.

How does botox work?

It is scientifically estimated that only a gram of botulinum toxin could kill a million people, which makes it one of the most toxic substances in the world. However, when used in consideration with an appropriate dosage, the botulimun toxin has been proven to be a successful and beneficial therapeutic protein. Acetylcholine, a chemical messenger that helps muscles to contract, is released by the nerves. Botox works by blocking the signals from the nerve cells, which is the release of acetylcholine to muscles when being injected into the body of humans. This can paralyze the muscle by making them unable to contract and become softer.

The uses of botox on medical and cosmetic field

For cosmetics, people often use botox for the treatment of facial wrinkles including forehead furrows, crow’s feet (lines around the eye), and frown lines. Botox injections can relax the facial muscles underlying and causing wrinkles for a period of time. Additionally, botox can also be used for other parts of your body such as lip lines, the chin, corner of the mouth, and the neck.

For medical uses, it is proven that botox can help treat many conditions related to body functions. Some of which are listed below:

  • Cervical dystonia. A condition in which your head turns or twists into uncomfortably painful position due to the involuntary contraction of your neck muscles;
  • Muscle contractures. Neurological conditions can cause the limbs to pull in to your center;
  • Eye squints migraines,
  • A chronic migraine;
  • Hyperhidrosis or excess sweating,
  • Bladder dysfunction or leaky bladders.

Side effects of botox

Besides the useful benefits in many areas, botox has some unexpected side effects. Headache, flu-like symptoms, dry mouth, rashes, wheezing and swelling are the mild side effects of using botox. Moreover, people experiencing botox injections can also suffer:

  • Mild pain, swelling or bruising at the injected areas;
  • Droopy eyelid or cockeyed eyebrows;
  • Crooked smile or drooling;
  • Eye dryness or excessive tearing.

In some rare cases, the botulinum toxin may spread to other body parts, which is really dangerous. If these effects below happen, it is crucial to contact your doctor immediately.

  • Weakness of muscles
  • Problems with the vision;
  • Trouble speaking or swallowing;
  • Difficulty breathing,
  • Unable to control the bladder.

Botox, especially botox injections can bring many benefits to improve the quality of human life in medical and cosmetic field. However, before deciding to use botox or botulinum toxin, it is advisable to have a full understanding of it.
