What is Rocephine® (ceftriaxone) used for?

Rocephine® is commonly used for bacterial infections treatment, including severe or life-threatening forms such as sepsis, meningitis, abdominal, bones, joints, soft tissue, skin and wound infections, impaired defense mechanisms, renal and UTI, respiratory tract infection (e.g., pneumonia, ear, nose and throat), genital infections including gonorrhea, peri-op prophylaxis, Lyme borreliosis.

How should I take Rocephine® (ceftriaxone)?

Use Rocephine® exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Follow all directions on your prescription label. Do not use this medicine in larger or smaller amounts or for longer than recommended.
Rocephine® is injected into a muscle, or into a vein through an IV. You may be shown how to use an IV at home. Do not give yourself this medicine if you do not understand how to use the injection and properly dispose of needles, IV tubing, and other items used.
You may need to mix Rocephine® with a liquid (diluent) before using it. If you are using the injections at home, be sure you understand how to properly mix and store the medication. Use only the diluent your doctor has recommended.

Do not mix Rocephine® in the same injection with other antibiotics, or with any diluent that contains calcium, including a TPN (total parenteral nutrition) solution.
After mixing your medicine, you will need to use it within a certain number of hours or days. This will depend on the diluent and how you store the mixture (at room temperature, in a refrigerator, or frozen). Carefully follow the mixing and storage instructions provided with your medicine. Ask your pharmacist if you have questions.
If you use other injectable medications, be sure to flush your intravenous catheter between injections of each medication.
Use Rocephine® for the full prescribed length of time. Your symptoms may improve before the infection is completely cleared. Skipping doses may also increase your risk of further infection that is resistant to antibiotics. Rocephine® will not treat a viral infection such as the common cold or flu.
Rocephine® can cause unusual results with certain lab tests for glucose (sugar) in the urine. Tell any doctor who treats you that you are using this medicine.
Store unmixed Rocephine® powder at room temperature, away from moisture, heat, and light.
If your medicine was provided in a frozen form or was frozen after mixing, thaw it in a refrigerator or at room temperature. Do not warm in a microwave or boiling water. Use the medicine as soon as possible after thawing it. Do not refreeze.
Use a disposable needle and syringe only once. Follow any state or local laws about throwing away used needles and syringes. Use a puncture-proof “sharps’ disposal container (ask your pharmacist where to get one and how to throw it away). Keep this container out of the reach of children and pets.

How do I store Rocephine® (ceftriaxone)?

Rocephine® is best stored at room temperature away from direct light and moisture. To prevent drug damage, you should not store Rocephine® in the bathroom or the freezer. There may be different brands of Rocephine® that may have different storage needs. It is important to always check the product package for instructions on storage, or ask your pharmacist. For safety, you should keep all medicines away from children and pets.

You should not flush Rocephine® down the toilet or pour them into a drain unless instructed to do so. It is important to properly discard this product when it is expired or no longer needed. Consult your pharmacist for more details about how to safely discard your product.

Precautions & warnings

What should I know before using Rocephine® (ceftriaxone)?

You should not use Rocephine® if you are allergic to ceftriaxone or to other cephalosporin antibiotics
Do not use Rocephine® in a child without a doctor’s advice, and never give more than the child’s prescribed dose.
Rocephine® should never be used in a premature baby, or in any newborn baby who has jaundice
Tell your doctor if you have an allergy to any drugs, kidney disease, liver disease, diabetes, gallbladder disease, a stomach or intestinal disorder such as colitis, a condition for which you take a blood thinner
Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant. Ceftriaxone can pass into breast milk and may harm a nursing baby.
Tell your doctor if you are breastfeeding a baby.

Is it safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

There are no adequate studies in women for determining risk when using Rocephine® during pregnancy or while breastfeeding. Please always consult with your doctor to weigh the potential benefits and risks before taking Rocephine®. Rocephine® is pregnancy risk category C, according to the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

Side effects

What side effects can occur from Rocephine® (ceftriaxone)?

Mild diarrhea;
Warmth, tight feeling, or a hard lump where the injection was given;
Vaginal itching or discharge;
Rash;
Abnormal liver function tests.

Not everyone experiences these side effects. There may be some side effects not listed above. If you have any concerns about a side-effect, please consult your doctor or pharmacist.

Interactions

What drugs may interact with Rocephine® (ceftriaxone)?

Rocephine® may interact with other drugs that you are currently taking, which can change how your drug works or increase your risk for serious side effects, such as:

Diluents containing Ca (Ringer’s solution, Hartmann’s solution);
Amsacrine;
Vancomycin;
Fluconazole & Aminoglycosides.

To avoid any potential drug interactions, you should keep a list of all the drugs you are using (including prescription drugs, nonprescription drugs, and herbal products) and share it with your doctor and pharmacist. For your safety, do not start, stop, or change the dosage of any drugs without your doctor’s approval.

Does food or alcohol interact with Rocephine® (ceftriaxone)?

Rocephine® may interact with food or alcohol by altering the way the drug works or increase the risk for serious side effects. Please discuss with your doctor or pharmacist any potential food or alcohol interactions before using this drug.

What is the dose of Rocephine® (ceftriaxone) for an adult?

The usual adult daily dose is1-2 g once daily. Severe infection: up to 4 g once daily.
For the treatment of uncomplicated gonococcal infections, a single intramuscular dose of 250 mg is recommended.
For preoperative use (surgical prophylaxis), a single dose of 1 gram administered intravenously 1/2 to 2 hours before surgery is recommended.

What is the dose of Rocephine® (ceftriaxone) for a child?

Neonate, infant & children (15 days-12 yr)20-80 mg/kg body with once daily.
Neonate up to 14 days20-50 mg/kg body with once daily, not to exceed 50 mg/kg.
MeningitisInfant & children: initially 100 mg/kg once daily. Max: 4 g/day.
Lyme borreliosis:50 mg/kg once daily for 14 days. Max: 2 g/day.

How is Rocephine® (ceftriaxone) available?

Rocephine® is available in the following dosage forms and strengths:

Rocephin powder for IM/IV Injection: 1g, 250mg, 500mg.

What should I do in case of an emergency or overdose?

In case of an emergency or an overdose, call your local emergency services (115) or go to your nearest emergency room.

What should I do if I miss a dose?

If you miss a dose of Rocephine®, take it as soon as possible. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and take your regular dose as scheduled. Do not take a double dose.
