What is Natrilix® (indapamide) used for?

Natrilix® is commonly used for treating high blood pressure alone or along with other medicines. It is also used to treat salt and water retention (swelling) associated with congestive heart failure.

How should I take Natrilix® (indapamide)?

Use indapamide as directed by your doctor. Check the label on the medicine for exact dosing instructions.

  • Take indapamide by mouth with or without food. If stomach upset occurs, take with food to reduce stomach irritation.
  • Indapamide may increase the amount of urine or cause you to urinate more often when you first start taking it. To keep this from disturbing your sleep, try to take your dose before 6 pm.
  • If you miss a dose of indapamide and you are taking one dose daily, take the missed dose if you remember the same day. Skip the missed dose if you do not remember until the next day. Do not take two doses at once.

Ask your health care provider any questions you may have about how to use indapamide.

How do I store Natrilix® (indapamide)?

Natrilix® is best stored at room temperature away from direct light and moisture. To prevent drug damage, you should not store Natrilix® in the bathroom or the freezer. There may be different brands of Natrilix® that may have different storage needs. It is important to always check the product package for instructions on storage, or ask your pharmacist. For safety, you should keep all medicines away from children and pets.

You should not flush Natrilix® down the toilet or pour them into a drain unless instructed to do so. It is important to properly discard this product when it is expired or no longer needed. Consult your pharmacist for more details about how to safely discard your product.

Precautions & warnings

What should I know before using Natrilix® (indapamide)?

Do not use indapamide if:

  • You are allergic to any ingredient in indapamide or to a sulfonamide medicine (e.g., sulfamethoxazole).
  • You are unable to urinate.
  • You are taking ketanserin.

Contact your doctor or health care provider right away if any of these apply to you.

Important safety information is:

  • Indapamide may cause drowsiness, dizziness, lightheadedness, or blurred vision. These effects may be worse if you take it with alcohol or certain medicines. Use indapamide with caution. Do not drive or perform other possibly unsafe tasks until you know how you react to it.
  • Indapamide may cause dizziness, lightheadedness, or fainting; alcohol, hot weather, exercise, or fever may increase these effects. To prevent them, sit up or stand slowly, especially in the morning. Sit or lie down at the first sign of any of these effects.
  • Patients who take medicine for high blood pressure often feel tired or run down for a few weeks after starting treatment. Be sure to take your medicine even if you may not feel normal. Tell your doctor if you develop any new symptoms.
  • Your doctor may check your blood electrolytes while you take indapamide to check for a fluid or electrolyte imbalance. Tell your doctor right away if you experience decreased urination; dry mouth; fainting; fast or irregular heartbeat; increased thirst; muscle pain, weakness, or cramping; restlessness; severe dizziness or drowsiness; stomach problems; or unusual tiredness or weakness.
  • Your doctor may have also prescribed a potassium supplement for you. If so, follow the dosing carefully. Do not start taking additional potassium on your own or change your diet to include more potassium without first checking with your doctor.
  • Indapamide may cause you to become sunburned more easily. Avoid the sun, sunlamps, or tanning booths until you know how you react to indapamide. Use a sunscreen or wear protective clothing if you must be outside for more than a short time.
  • Tell your doctor or dentist that you take indapamide before you receive any medical or dental care, emergency care, or surgery.
  • Diabetes patients – Indapamide may affect your blood sugar. Check blood sugar levels closely. Ask your doctor before you change the dose of your diabetes medicine.
  • Indapamide may interfere with certain lab tests. Be sure your doctor and lab personnel know you are taking indapamide.
  • Lab tests, including blood electrolyte, glucose, and uric acid levels, and kidney function, may be performed while you use indapamide. These tests may be used to monitor your condition or check for side effects. Be sure to keep all doctor and lab appointments.
  • Use indapamide with caution in the elderly; they may be more sensitive to its effects, especially low blood sodium or potassium.
  • Indapamide should be used with extreme caution in children; safety and effectiveness in children have not been confirmed.

Is it safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

If you become pregnant, contact your doctor. You will need to discuss the benefits and risks of using indapamide while you are pregnant.

What is the dose of Natrilix® (indapamide) for an adult?

The adult starting dose is 1.25 mg as a single daily dose taken in the morning. If the response to 1.25 mg is not satisfactory after four weeks, the daily dose may be increased to 2.5 mg taken once daily. If the response to 2.5 mg is not satisfactory after four weeks, the daily dose may be increased to 5 mg taken once daily, but adding another antihypertensive should be considered.

Edema of congestive heart failure:

The adult starting dose for edema of congestive heart failure is 2.5 mg as a single daily dose taken in the morning. If the response to 2.5 mg is not satisfactory after one week, the daily dose may be increased to 5 mg taken once daily.

If the antihypertensive response is insufficient, indapamide may be combined with other antihypertensive drugs, with careful monitoring of blood pressure. It is recommended that the usual dose of other agents be reduced by 50% during initial combination therapy. As the blood pressure response becomes evident, further dosage adjustments may be necessary.

In general, doses of 5 mg and larger have not appeared to provide additional effects on blood pressure or heart failure, but are associated with a greater degree of hypokalemia. There is minimal clinical trial experience in patients with doses greater than 5 mg once a day.

What is the dose of Natrilix® (indapamide) for a child?

The dosage has not been established in pediatric patients. It may be unsafe for your child. It is always important to fully understand the safety of the drug before using. Please consult with your doctor or pharmacist for more information.
