What is Flagentyl® (secnidazole) used for?

Flagentyl® is commonly used for the treatment of intraintestinal and extraintestinal amebiasis (liver), intestinal diseases caused by Giardia lamblia (giardiasis or lambliasis), trichomoniasis (vaginitis and urethritis) and nonspecific vaginosis.

How should I take Flagentyl® (secnidazole)?

Follow exactly instructions of use of secnidazole provided by your doctor. Consult your doctor or pharmacist when in doubt. Ask your doctor to explain any aspect that you do not understand, contained in the instruction leaflet that comes with the medicine.

How do I store Flagentyl® (secnidazole)?

Flagentyl® is best stored at room temperature away from direct light and moisture. To prevent drug damage, you should not store Flagentyl® in the bathroom or the freezer. There may be different brands of Flagentyl® that may have different storage needs. It is important to always check the product package for instructions on storage, or ask your pharmacist. For safety, you should keep all medicines away from children and pets.

You should not flush Flagentyl® down the toilet or pour them into a drain unless instructed to do so. It is important to properly discard this product when it is expired or no longer needed. Consult your pharmacist for more details about how to safely discard your product.


Precautions & warnings

What should I know before using Flagentyl® (secnidazole)?

Before using Flagentyl®, you should tell your doctor if you:

  • Have an intolerance to sugars.
  • Have a history of reactions to acetylsalicylic acid (aspirin).
  • Have allergies such as asthma, rhinitis, urticaria and/or have allergic reactions to aspirin.
  • Are allergic (hypersensitive) to the active substance secnidazole or any of the other ingredients of the medicinal product prescribed to you.
  • Have a severe liver disorder.
  • Have a blood dyscrasia or porphyria.
  • Have an active organic disease of the nervous system.

Is it safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?


Secnidazole should not be administered during pregnancy, especially during the first trimester.


Secnidazole reaches in breast milk similar concentration to that of maternal blood, so it must not be administered to nursing mothers.


Side effects

What side effects can occur from Flagentyl® (secnidazole)?

The following is a list of possible side effects that may occur from all constituting ingredients of Flagentyl® Tablet. These side effects are possible, but do not always occur.

  • Nausea
  • Metallic taste
  • Glossitis
  • Stomatitis
  • Epigastric pain
  • Gastrointestinal disturbances

Not everyone experiences these side effects. There may be some side effects not listed above. If you have any concerns about a side-effect, please consult your doctor or pharmacist.


What drugs may interact with Flagentyl® (secnidazole)?

Flagentyl® may interact with other drugs that you are currently taking, which can change how your drug works or increase your risk for serious side effects. To avoid any potential drug interactions, you should keep a list of all the drugs you are using (including prescription drugs, nonprescription drugs, and herbal products) and share it with your doctor and pharmacist. For your safety, do not start, stop, or change the dosage of any drugs without your doctor’s approval.

Products may interact with this drug including:

  • Antacids
  • Sucralfate
  • Anticoagulants (warfarin, acenocoumarol)
  • Phenobarbital
  • Lithium
  • Disulfiram (medicine used in alcohol detoxification)
  • Cimetidine

Does food or alcohol interact with Flagentyl® (secnidazole)?

Secnidazol absorption is not influenced by food intake; can be administered before, after or while meals.

Secnidazole should not be administered with drugs whose composition includes ethyl alcohol neither with alcoholic beverages since may occur aches, malaise, severe hypotension, tachycardia, flushing and vomiting, which is known as disulfiram effect. For this reason, drinking alcoholic beverages should be avoided during treatment including up to 4 days after completion.

Flagentyl® may interact with your health condition. This interaction may worsen your health condition or alter the way the drug works. It is important to always let your doctor and pharmacist know all the health conditions you currently have.

What is the dose of Flagentyl® (secnidazole) for an adult?

Severe invasive amoebiasis

Adult: 1.5 g daily as single or in divided doses for 5 days.


2 g as a single dose.


2 g as a single dose.


Adult: 2 g as a single dose.

What is the dose of Flagentyl® (secnidazole) for a child?

Severe invasive amoebiasis

Child: 30 mg/kg daily for 5 days.


Child: 30 mg/kg as a single dose.


Child: 30 mg/kg as a single dose.


Child: 30 mg/kg as a single dose.

How is Flagentyl® (secnidazole) available?

Flagentyl® is available in the following dosage forms and strengths:

  • Flagentyl® tablet 500mg
  • Flagentyl® tablet 100mg

What should I do in case of an emergency or overdose?

In case of an emergency or an overdose, call your local emergency services or go to your nearest emergency room.

What should I do if I miss a dose?

If you miss a dose of Flagentyl®, take it as soon as possible. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and take your regular dose as scheduled. Do not take a double dose.
