What is Clexane® (enoxaparin) used for?

Clexane® is commonly used for treating or preventing these following conditions, such as:

  • Blood clots
  • Certain types of heart disease (e.g., angina and heart attacks), when used with aspirin
  • Blood clots forming after an operation, during hospitalization or extended bed rest or during purification of the blood by an artificial kidney (hemodialysis)

How should I take Clexane® (enoxaparin)?

Clexane® is given by an injection into a vein. This will be done in hospital by your doctor or nurse.

How do I store Clexane® (enoxaparin)?

Clexane® is best stored at room temperature away from direct light and moisture. To prevent drug damage, you should not store Clexane® in the bathroom or the freezer. There may be different brands of Clexane® that may have different storage needs. It is important to always check the product package for instructions on storage, or ask your pharmacist. For safety, you should keep all medicines away from children and pets.

You should not flush Clexane® down the toilet or pour them into a drain unless instructed to do so. It is important to properly discard this product when it is expired or no longer needed. Consult your pharmacist for more details about how to safely discard your product.

Precautions & warnings

What should I know before using Clexane® (enoxaparin)?

Before using this drug, tell your doctor if:

  • You are pregnant or breastfeeding. This is because, while you are expecting or feeding a baby, you should only take medicines on the recommendation of a doctor.
  • You are taking any other medicines. This includes any medicines you are taking which are available to buy without a prescription, such as herbal and complementary medicines.
  • You have allergy with any of active or inactive ingredients of Clexane® or other medications.
  • You have any other illnesses, disorders, or medical conditions.

Is it safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

There isn’t enough information about the safety of using Clexane® during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Please always consult with your doctor to weigh the potential benefits and risks before taking Clexane®.

Side effects

What side effects can occur from Clexane® (enoxaparin)?

Tell your doctor if you notice any of the following at your injection area:

  • Pain, bruising or irritation
  • Hard inflamed nodules
  • Itchy red rash
  • Bleeding
  • Itchy skin

If any of the following happen, stop using Clexane® and tell your doctor immediately or go to the emergency department at your nearest hospital:

  • Painful itchy red/purple rash
  • Difficulty in breathing
  • Symptoms of hay fever
  • Feeling faint
  • Itching hives
  • Blisters or other symptoms of allergy
  • Bleeding (including nose bleeds or prolonged bleeding from cuts)
  • Bruising more easily than normal
  • Red or dark brown urine
  • Red or black bowel motions
  • Numbness (paralysis)
  • Problems with coordination
  • Dizziness
  • Tiredness
  • Light-headedness
  • Blurred vision
  • Confusion or difficulty speaking
  • Severe abdominal
  • Chest pain and headache
  • Nausea
  • Diarrhea
  • Swelling of the hands, ankles or feet
  • A fine widespread rash especially on your mouth or eyes
  • Sudden onset of white or blue color in fingers or toes suggesting poor blood supply

Not everyone experiences these side effects. There may be some side effects not listed above. If you have any concerns about a side-effect, please consult your doctor or pharmacist.


What drugs may interact with Clexane® (enoxaparin)?

Clexane® may interact with other drugs that you are currently taking, which can change how your drug works or increase your risk for serious side effects. To avoid any potential drug interactions, you should keep a list of all the drugs you are using (including prescription drugs, nonprescription drugs, and herbal products) and share it with your doctor and pharmacist. For your safety, do not start, stop, or change the dosage of any drugs without your doctor’s approval.

Some medicines may interfere with this drug, include:

  • Medicines or substances used to prevent and treat blood clots
  • Medicines containing aspirin or salicylates
  • Dextran 40, a medicine use to treat shock
  • Medicines used to treat inflammatory disease, such as oral non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medicines or corticosteroids

Does food or alcohol interact with Clexane® (enoxaparin)?

Clexane® may interact with food or alcohol by altering the way the drug works or increase the risk for serious side effects. Please discuss with your doctor or pharmacist any potential food or alcohol interactions before using this drug.

What health conditions may interact with Clexane® (enoxaparin)?

Clexane® may interact with your health condition. This interaction may worsen your health condition or alter the way the drug works. It is important to always let your doctor and pharmacist know all the health conditions you currently have.

Especially if you have:

  • Major bleeding disorder or blood clotting problem, including a recent stroke or hereditary blood disorders
  • Bacterial endocarditis
  • Inflammation of the lining of the heart caused by bacteria
  • Stomach or bowel problems such as ulcers or ulcerative colitis
  • Kidney or liver disease
  • Uncontrolled high blood pressure
  • Diabetic related eye disease
  • Recently undergone brain, spinal or eye surgery
  • History of spinal surgery or spinal deformity
  • An artificial heart valve
  • Obesity

What is the dose of Clexane® (enoxaparin) for an adult?

For the prevention of blood clots:

Moderate risk patients: the recommended dose is 20mg.

High risk patients: the recommended dose is 40mg.

For the treatment of blood clots which have formed in the leg/deep vein

The usual dose is 1mg/kg body weight twice a day or 1.5mg/kg body weight once a day injected under the skin.

Warfarin sodium therapy is usually started within 72 hours of Clexane® by your doctor.

For patients that require dialysis

The usual dose is 1mg/kg into the tubing of the dialysis machine at the start of the session. Additional doses may be given if required.

For treatment of severe heart attacks

The usual dose is 30mg injected into a vein plus 1mg/kg injected under the skin, followed by 1mg/kg injected under the skin twice a day.

For treatment of certain other types of heart disease

The usual dose is 1 mg/kg injected under the skin twice a day.

What is the dose of Clexane® (enoxaparin) for a child?

The dosage has not been established in pediatric patients. It may be unsafe for your child. It is always important to fully understand the safety of the drug before using. Please consult with your doctor or pharmacist for more information.

How is Clexane® (enoxaparin) available?

Clexane® is available in the following dosage forms and strengths:

  • Ready to use Prefilled Syringes: 20mg/0.2mL, 10’s; 40mg/0.4mL, 10’s
  • Ready to use Prefilled Syringes with graduated markings: 60mg/0.6mL, 10’s; 80mg/0.8mL, 10’s; 100mg/1.0mL, 10’s; 120mg/0.8mL, 10’s; 150mg/1.0mL, 10’s

What should I do in case of an emergency or overdose?

In case of an emergency or an overdose, call your local emergency services or go to your nearest emergency room.

What should I do if I miss a dose?

If you miss a dose of Clexane®, take it as soon as possible. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and take your regular dose as scheduled. Do not take a double dose.
