What is Cepodem® (cefpodoxime) used for?

Cepodem® is an antibiotic. It is used to treat a wide variety of bacterial infections, upper respiratory tract infection, tonsillitis, urinary tract infection, gonorrhea, pneumonia and typhoid fever.

Cepodem® may be used for other purposes, ask your doctor for more information.

How should I take Cepodem® (cefpodoxime)?

Take this medication by mouth, usually every 12 hours or as directed by your doctor. If you are using the tablet form of this medication, take it with food to help increase the absorption of the drug.

If you are using the suspension form of this medication, take it with or without food. Shake the bottle well before each dose.

Antibiotics work best when the amount of medicine in your body is kept at a constant level. Therefore, take this drug at evenly spaced intervals.

Continue to take this medication until the full prescribed amount is finished, even if symptoms disappear after a few days. Stopping the medication too early may result in a return of the infection.

How do I store Cepodem® (cefpodoxime)?

Cepodem® is best stored at room temperature away from direct light and moisture. To prevent drug damage, you should not store Cepodem® in the bathroom or the freezer. There may be different brands of Cepodem® that may have different storage needs. It is important to always check the product package for instructions on storage, or ask your pharmacist. For safety, you should keep all medicines away from children and pets.

You should not flush Cepodem® down the toilet or pour them into a drain unless instructed to do so. It is important to properly discard this product when it is expired or no longer needed. Consult your pharmacist for more details about how to safely discard your product.

What should I know before using Cepodem® (cefpodoxime)?

Before using this drug, tell your doctor if:

  • You are allergic to any ingredients of this drug.
  • You are allergic to penicillin or other cephalosporin antibiotics.
  • You have other allergies.

Is it safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

There are no adequate studies in women for determining risk when using this medication during pregnancy or while breastfeeding. Please always consult with your doctor to weigh the potential benefits and risks before taking this medication. This medication is pregnancy risk category B, according to the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

Side effects

What side effects can occur from Cepodem® (cefpodoxime)?

When using this drug, some side effects may occur:

  • Diarrhea
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Headache
  • Loss of appetite
  • Swelling of the ankles/feet
  • Tiredness
  • Fast/pounding heartbeat
  • Trouble breathing
  • New signs of infection (e.g., fever, persistent sore throat)
  • Dark urine
  • Yellowing eyes/skin
  • Easy bruising/bleeding
  • Signs of kidney problems (such as change in the amount of urine)
  • Oral thrush
  • Vaginal yeast infection
  • Vaginal itching

Seek immediate medical attention if any of these rare but very serious side effects occur vision changes, slurred speech, mental/mood changes (such as confusion).

Not everyone experiences these side effects. There may be some side effects not listed above. If you have any concerns about a side-effect, please consult your doctor or pharmacist.

What drugs may interact with Cepodem® (cefpodoxime)?

Cepodem® may interact with other drugs that you are currently taking, which can change how your drug works or increase your risk for serious side effects. To avoid any potential drug interactions, you should keep a list of all the drugs you are using (including prescription drugs, nonprescription drugs, and herbal products) and share it with your doctor and pharmacist. For your safety, do not start, stop, or change the dosage of any drugs without your doctor’s approval.

Products may interact with this drug, including:

  • Drugs decreasing stomach acid (e.g., antacids, H2 blockers such as ranitidine)
  • Live bacterial vaccines

Cepodem® may interact with your health condition. This interaction may worsen your health condition or alter the way the drug works. It is important to always let your doctor and pharmacist know all the health conditions you currently have. Especially, if you have kidney disease, stomach/intestinal disease (e.g., colitis).

What is the dose of Cepodem® (cefpodoxime) for an adult?

Bronchitis

The recommended dose is 200 mg orally every 12 hours for 10 days.

Cystitis

The recommended dose is 100 mg orally every 12 hours for 7 days.

Gonococcal Infection – Uncomplicated

Uncomplicated urethral, cervical, or female anorectal infections: The recommended dose is 200 mg orally, once.

Gonococcal Infection – Disseminated

The recommended dose is 400 mg orally twice a day.

Pneumonia

Community-acquired pneumonia: The recommended dose is 200 mg orally every 12 hours for 14 days.

Pyelonephritis

The recommended dose is 100 mg orally every 12 hours. Therapy should be continued for about 14 days, depending on the nature and severity of the infection.

Sinusitis

The recommended dose is 200 mg orally every 12 hours for 10 days.

Skin or Soft Tissue Infection

Uncomplicated infection: The recommended dose is 400 mg orally every 12 hours for 7 to 14 days.

Tonsillitis/Pharyngitis

The recommended dose is 100 mg orally every 12 hours for 5 to 10 days.

Upper Respiratory Tract Infection

The recommended dose is 100 mg orally every 12 hours. Therapy should be continued for approximately 10 to 14 days, depending on the nature and severity of the infection.

What is the dose of Cepodem® (cefpodoxime) for a child?

Bronchitis

12 years or older: The recommended dose is 200 mg orally every 12 hours for 10 days.

Cystitis

12 years or older: The recommended dose is 100 mg orally every 12 hours for 7 days.

Gonococcal Infection – Uncomplicated

12 years or older: The recommended dose is 200 mg orally one time.

Gonococcal Infection – Disseminated

12 years or older: The recommended dose is 400 mg orally twice a day.

Otitis Media

2 months through 12 years: The recommended dose is 5 mg/kg/dose (maximum 200 mg) orally every 12 hours for 5 days.

Maximum dose is 400 mg/day.

Pneumonia:
12 years or older: The recommended dose is 200 mg orally every 12 hours for 14 days.

Sinusitis

2 months through 12 years: The recommended dose is 5 mg/kg/dose (maximum 200 mg) orally every 12 hours for 10 days.

Maximum dose is 400 mg/day.

12 years or older: The recommended dose is 200 mg orally every 12 hours for 10 days.

Skin or Soft Tissue Infection

12 years or older: The recommended dose is 400 mg orally every 12 hours for 7 to 14 days.

Tonsillitis/Pharyngitis

2 months through 12 years: The recommended dose is 5 mg/kg/dose (maximum 100 mg) orally every 12 hours for 5 to 10 days.

Maximum dose is 200 mg/day.

12 years or older: The recommended dose is 100 mg orally every 12 hours for 5 to 10 days.

How is Cepodem® (cefpodoxime) available?

Cepodem® is available in the following dosage forms and strengths:

  • Tablet100mg

What should I do in case of an emergency or overdose?

In case of an emergency or an overdose, call your local emergency services or go to your nearest emergency room.

What should I do if I miss a dose?

If you miss a dose of Cepodem®, take it as soon as possible. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and take your regular dose as scheduled. Do not take a double dose.
