What is Arcalion® (Sulbutiamine) used for?

Arcalion® is a synthetic derivative of thiamine (vitamin B). It is commonly used for treatment of these health conditions:

  • Alzheimer’s disease;
  • Depression;
  • Diabetic nerve pain;
  • Erectile dysfunction(ED);
  • Fatigue related to multiple sclerosis (MS) or by an infection;
  • Weakness;
  • Athletic performance;
  • Memory;
  • Other conditions.

How should I take Arcalion® (Sulbutiamine)?

It comes as a tablet to take by mouth, with or without food but should be taken with a glass of water.

The tablets should always be taken whole and not chewed, broken or crushed to prevent too much of the medication from being released at one time.

How do I store Arcalion® (Sulbutiamine)?

Arcalion® is best stored at room temperature away from direct light and moisture. To prevent drug damage, you should not store Arcalion® in the bathroom or the freezer. There may be different brands of Arcalion® that may have different storage needs. It is important to always check the product package for instructions on storage, or ask your pharmacist. For safety, you should keep all medicines away from children and pets.

You should not flush Arcalion® down the toilet or pour them into a drain unless instructed to do so. It is important to properly discard this product when it is expired or no longer needed. Consult your pharmacist for more details about how to safely discard your product.

Precautions & warnings

What should I know before using Arcalion® (Sulbutiamine)?

Consult with your doctor or pharmacist, if:

  • You are pregnant or breastfeeding. This is because, while you are expecting or feeding a baby, you should only take medicines on the recommendation of a doctor.
  • You are taking any other medicines. This includes any medicines you are taking which are available to buy without a prescription, such as herbal and complementary medicines.
  • You have allergy with Arcalion® or other medications.
  • You have any other illnesses, disorders, or medical conditions.

Is it safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

There isn’t enough information about the safety of using Arcalion® during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Please always consult with your doctor to weigh the potential benefits and risks before taking Arcalion®.

No fetal toxicity or malformation has been reported. However, follow-up of women exposed to Arcalion® during pregnancy is insufficient to exclude such a risk. Therefore, as a precautionary measure, it is recommended not to use Arcalion® during pregnancy.

As in pregnancy, the absence of data concerning the diffusion into breast milk, treatment with Arcalion® is not recommended for nursing mothers.

Always consult your health care provider prior to using this medication if you are pregnant, breastfeeding.

Side effects

What side effects can occur from Arcalion® (Sulbutiamine)?

Arcalion® may cause these side effects, such as:

  • Headaches;
  • Irritation;
  • Renal failure;
  • Dermatitis (inflammation of the skin);
  • Lupus symptoms fatigue (extreme tiredness);
  • Joint pain and swelling;
  • Rashes – particularly on the face, wrists and hands;
  • Heightened levels of uric acid;
  • Epidermolysis(a general term used to describe a group of rare inherited skin disorders that cause the skin to become very fragile);
  • Redness and inflammation of the thin layer of tissue that covers the front of the eye;
  • Allergic reaction: difficulty breathing, a tight chest, swelling, hives, or skin rashes.

Not everyone experiences these side effects. There may be some side effects not listed above. If you have any concerns about a side-effect, please consult your doctor or pharmacist.


What drugs may interact with Arcalion® (Sulbutiamine)?

Arcalion® may interact with other drugs that you are currently taking, which can change how your drug works or increase your risk for serious side effects. To avoid any potential drug interactions, you should keep a list of all the drugs you are using (including prescription drugs, nonprescription drugs, and herbal products) and share it with your doctor and pharmacist. For your safety, do not start, stop, or change the dosage of any drugs without your doctor’s approval.

  • Hypersensitivity to sulbutiamine.
  • Malabsorption of glucose and galactose or a deficit in lactase.

What is the dose of Arcalion® (Sulbutiamine) for an adult?

  • 2 to 3 tablets daily or as directed by a doctor.

If you miss a dose of Arcalion®, take it as soon as possible. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and take your regular dose as scheduled. Do not take a double dose.
