What is Flixonase used for?

Flixonase is commonly used for treating nasal symptoms of seasonal or year-round allergies, including congestion, sneezing, runny nose, perennial rhinitis, and management of associated sinus pain and pressure.

Flixonase may be prescribed for other uses. Ask your doctor or pharmacist for more information.

How should I take Flixonase?

To use the Flixonase nasal spray:

  • Blow your nose gently. Keep your head upright and insert the tip of the bottle into one nostril. Press your other nostril closed with your finger. Breathe in quickly and gently spray the medicine into your nose. Then use the spray in your other nostril.
  • Do not blow your nose for at least a few minutes after using the nasal spray.
  • Use only the number of sprays your doctor has prescribed.
  • If the spray gets in your eyes or mouth or on your skin, rinse with water.

How do I store Flixonase?

Flixonase is best stored at room temperature away from direct light and moisture. To prevent drug damage, you should not store Flixonase in the bathroom or the freezer. There may be different brands of Flixonase that may have different storage needs. It is important to always check the product package for instructions on storage, or ask your pharmacist. For safety, you should keep all medicines away from children and pets.

You should not flush Flixonase down the toilet or pour them into a drain unless instructed to do so. It is important to properly discard this product when it is expired or no longer needed. Consult your pharmacist for more details about how to safely discard your product.

What should I know before using Flixonase?

Is it safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

There are no adequate studies in women for determining risk when using this medication during pregnancy or while breastfeeding. Please always consult with your doctor to weigh the potential benefits and risks before taking this medication. This medication is pregnancy risk category C, according to the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

  • B=No risk in some studies;
  • C=There may be some risk;
  • D=Positive evidence of risk;
  • X=Contraindicated;
  • N=Unknown.

Breastfeeding:

Unknown if distributed in human breast milk.

Side effects

What side effects can occur from Flixonase?

Here are side effects:

  • Epistaxis;
  • Headache;
  • Unpleasant taste/smell;
  • Dryness and irritation of the nose and throat.

What is the dose of Flixonase for an adult?

  • 2 sprays into each nostril once a day, preferably in the morning. In some cases, 2 sprays into each nostril bd may be required.
  • Max daily dose: 4 sprays into each nostril.

What is the dose of Flixonase for a child?

Children 4-11 years

  • 1 spray into each nostril once a day, preferably in the morning.
  • Max daily dose: 2 sprays into each nostril.

How is Flixonase available?

Flixonase is available in the following dosage forms and strengths:

  • Flixonase aqueous nasal spray 0.05 %.

What should I do in case of an emergency or overdose?

In case of an emergency or an overdose, call your local emergency services (115) or go to your nearest emergency room.

It is also important to carry a written list of all of the prescription and nonprescription (over-the-counter) medicines you are taking with you in case of emergencies.

What should I do if I miss a dose?

If you miss a dose of Flixonase, take it as soon as possible. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and take your regular dose as scheduled. Do not take a double dose.
