    Precipitous Labor and Delivery

What is precipitous labor and delivery?

A typical process of labor and delivery include 3 main stages:

    −Early and active labor

    −Birth of the baby

    −Delivery of the placenta

Although each woman experiences labor and delivery differently, all the stages usually last from 6 to 18 hours. Precipitous labor, commonly known as rapid labor, refers to a labor that may be as short as 3 hours. Most cases of precipitous labor do not last longer than 5 hours.

Some women may give everything to have a labor this quick and avoid all the crushing pain. However, rapid labor comes with drawbacks.

Who is more likely to have a rapid labor?

Rapid labor is more common among women who:

    −Have strong uterus contractions

−Have an extremely compliant birth canal

−Used to experience rapid labor before

−Have a smaller than average baby

Signs and symptoms of precipitous labor

Precipitous labor often starts suddenly with intense and closely timed contractions. If you experience precipitous labor, you will have few chances to recover between those contractions. Many report to suffer severe pain that feels like a long contraction. You will likely experience a feeling of pressure and a sudden urge to push. Think of the urge you feel when you pass a bowel movement. In many cases, the urge does not come with contractions since your cervix dilates too rapidly.

    The drawbacks of rapid labor

Rapid labor comes suddenly, taking the pregnant woman by surprise. This can make her feel like she is losing control. The location of the birth is also a cause for concern. When the pregnant woman realizes they are not just some Braxton Hicks contractions and that she is really going to give birth soon, there is often very little time to head to a hospital. Also, the method of pain medication she wants to use may not be available.

Mothers who experience rapid labor may suffer from an increased risk of cervical and vaginal lacerations, uterine and vaginal bleeding, prolonged recovery time. In addition, if the mother cannot get to a hospital in time, she may risk giving birth in a unsterilized environment, which raises her risk of infection. This elevated risk of infection also applies to the baby. The baby may accidentally breathe in the amniotic fluid.

What to do if you have a rapid labor?

Although you cannot slow your labor down, there are certain things you can do to ensure a safe labor and delivery:

    −Call for medical help

−Use breathing techniques to stay in control

−Stay in a clean place until help arrives

−Lay down on your back or your side
