Proscar is a prescription tablet for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), a non-cancerous growth of the prostate that becomes common after 50. Proscar treats the cause rather than only the symptoms: it lowers DHT, the hormone that makes the prostate grow, so the gland gradually shrinks. This also lowers the long-term risk of suddenly being unable to pass urine and of needing prostate surgery.
The enlarged gland squeezes the urethra, so urine comes out slowly or in bursts.
Waking two or more times to pass urine is one of the most common reasons men seek help.
A bladder that does not empty fully means more trips and, sometimes, infections.
Proscar 5mg is for prostate enlargement only. It is not a hair loss treatment, which uses a 1mg dose.
Proscar is a slow, steady treatment. Knowing the timeline helps you stay on it long enough to feel the benefit.
DHT levels fall quickly, but the prostate has not shrunk yet, so most men feel little change. Keep taking it every day.
Some men notice a steadier stream and fewer night-time trips as the gland starts to shrink.
This is when doctors judge how well it works. The prostate is often noticeably smaller and PSA readings are about half of what they were.
Benefits are maintained for as long as you keep taking it. Your doctor will review your symptoms and PSA regularly.
Swallow it whole with water, with or without food, at about the same time each day.
Take it the same day if you remember. If not, skip it. Never take two at once.
Proscar controls BPH while you take it. Stopping lets the prostate grow back over months.
Many men also take an alpha blocker such as tamsulosin, which relaxes the prostate within days while Proscar works on its size. Your doctor will tell you if a combination suits you.
Proscar roughly halves PSA readings after 6 months. Tell any doctor who checks your PSA that you take it, so the result is read correctly. A PSA that rises while you are on Proscar should always be looked into.
Whole tablets are coated and safe to touch. Women who are pregnant or may become pregnant should not handle crushed or broken tablets, as finasteride can pass through the skin and affect a male baby's development.
Most men take Proscar without problems. When side effects happen they are usually sexual, affect a small minority, and often settle with time.
Lower sex drive, difficulty getting an erection, and less semen when you ejaculate.
Breast tenderness or swelling, rash, and low mood. Tell your doctor about any change in mood.
A breast lump, pain or nipple discharge, swelling of the lips or face, or thoughts of self-harm.
