Avodart is the brand name for dutasteride, a prescription medicine for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), the non-cancerous growth of the prostate that becomes common after 50. It belongs to a group called 5 alpha reductase inhibitors. Dutasteride blocks both forms of the enzyme that turns testosterone into DHT, the hormone that makes the prostate grow, and lowers DHT by around 90%. With less DHT, the prostate slowly shrinks, by about a quarter over two years in clinical studies, which eases the pressure on the urethra.

A larger prostate squeezes the urethra, so the stream is slow or keeps stopping.
The bladder does not empty fully, so it fills again sooner, often more than once a night.
A sudden need to go, or having to push to start and finish, are common early signs.

It works best when the prostate is clearly enlarged, which a doctor can tell from an examination, a scan or your PSA level. Because it treats the size of the prostate itself, it is a long-term medicine rather than a quick fix. Avodart is for men only and does not treat prostate cancer or prostatitis.
Avodart works gradually because it changes the size of the prostate. Here is the usual pattern.
DHT starts to fall within days, but the prostate has not shrunk yet, so most men feel little change. Keep going.
The prostate is getting smaller. Some men notice a stronger stream and fewer trips at night.
Most of the benefit is reached. This is when your doctor usually reviews progress and resets your PSA baseline.
The benefit lasts while you keep taking it. Regular reviews check your symptoms and PSA each year.
Take it at about the same time each day, with or without food. Linking it to a daily habit, like brushing your teeth, makes it easier to remember.
Use a glass of water. Do not chew or open the soft capsule, as the oily contents can irritate your mouth and throat.
Take it when you remember that day. If a day has passed, skip it and carry on. Never take two capsules at once.
Avodart is meant to be taken every day for the long term. Give it at least 6 months before deciding whether it is helping, and keep your regular doctor reviews.
Avodart lowers PSA by about half after 6 months. Tell any doctor checking your PSA that you take it, and have a rising PSA looked into.
Women who are or may be pregnant, and children, should not touch leaking capsules. Wash with soap and water if contact happens.
Do not donate blood while taking Avodart and for at least 6 months after your last dose.
Most men take Avodart without problems. Its side effects come from lowering DHT, so they are mostly sexual. They affect a minority of men and are most likely in the first year. Some ease with time; if any persist or bother you, tell your doctor rather than stopping on your own.
Lower sex drive, difficulty getting or keeping an erection, and less semen when you ejaculate.
Breast tenderness or swelling, skin rash or itching, and dizziness.
A breast lump, pain or nipple discharge, swelling of the face, lips or throat, difficulty breathing, or a severe rash.
