Duodart is a once daily prescription capsule for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), the non-cancerous enlargement of the prostate that affects many men over 50. It combines two medicines that work in different ways, so one capsule replaces two separate pills. For men who would otherwise need both, that means one less thing to remember each day.
Blocks the conversion of testosterone into DHT, the hormone that drives prostate growth. Over months the prostate gets smaller, which treats the cause of the blockage.
An alpha blocker that relaxes the muscle in the prostate and at the bladder neck. It eases the flow within days, while the dutasteride is still working.

It is usually chosen when the prostate is clearly enlarged and symptoms are bothersome enough that one medicine alone may not be enough. In large clinical trials, taking the two together lowered the risk of symptoms getting worse more than either medicine on its own. Duodart does not treat prostate cancer, erection problems or hair loss.
The two medicines work on different timelines: one quickly, one slowly. Here is what most men notice.
The tamsulosin part relaxes the prostate, so many men notice an easier, stronger flow. Some feel light headed when standing up early on.
Dutasteride lowers DHT and the prostate starts to shrink. Night-time trips often begin to settle.
The usual point for your doctor to review progress. PSA is now about half its earlier level, which is expected.
Both effects last while you keep taking it daily. Your doctor will check your symptoms and PSA at regular reviews.
Take it about 30 minutes after the same meal every day, such as breakfast. This keeps tamsulosin levels steady and reduces dizziness.
Use a glass of water. Do not chew, crush or open the capsule, as the contents can irritate your mouth and throat.
Take it after your next meal that day. If a day has passed, skip it. Never take two capsules at once.
Stand up slowly for the first few days, especially at night, until you know how the capsule affects you. Do not take Duodart with another alpha blocker or with Avodart, as it already contains both medicines.
Duodart roughly halves PSA after 6 months. Tell any doctor checking your PSA that you take it, and have a rising PSA looked into.
Before cataract or glaucoma surgery, tell the eye doctor you take Duodart, as tamsulosin can affect the iris during the operation.
Women who are or may be pregnant should avoid touching leaking capsules. Do not donate blood while on Duodart and for 6 months after the last dose.
Most men take Duodart without serious problems. Because it contains two medicines, side effects can come from either part: dizziness usually comes from tamsulosin, while sexual changes can come from both. Some ease with time; if any persist or bother you, tell your doctor.
Less or no semen when you ejaculate, lower sex drive, difficulty getting an erection, and dizziness, especially when standing up.
Breast tenderness or enlargement, a blocked or runny nose, rash, and feeling tired or weak.
Fainting, a painful erection lasting more than 4 hours, swelling of the face, lips or throat, a severe rash, or a breast lump or nipple discharge.
