What minoxidil is, and is it available in Malaysia?
Minoxidil is a medicine applied to the scalp as a 5% solution, twice a day, to slow and partly reverse androgenetic alopecia, the gradual patterned thinning seen in men and women. It is the most widely used topical treatment for hair loss.
Yes, it is available in Malaysia. Minoxidil is sold here as a 5% topical solution registered with the National Pharmaceutical Regulatory Agency (NPRA). The two packs on this page are Avoxidil 50mg/ml 60ml (MAL20076046ACZ) and Vello-5 5% w/v 60ml (MAL18126004AZ), priced RM79 and RM89 for a 60ml bottle, which is about one month of twice daily use.
Topical minoxidil is a Group C poison under the Poisons Act 1952, so no doctor's prescription is needed, but it must be supplied under the supervision of a registered pharmacist who checks that it is suitable for you. Oral minoxidil tablets are a different, prescription only medicine and are not sold here.
How minoxidil works
It was first developed as a tablet for high blood pressure, because it widens blood vessels, and extra hair growth turned up as a side effect. That side effect became the treatment: the medicine was reformulated as a solution you apply to the scalp, and topical minoxidil has been used for androgenetic alopecia ever since.
On the scalp, minoxidil is understood to keep follicles in the growing phase of the hair cycle for longer and to shorten the resting phase, so more follicles are producing hair at any one time. It does not affect the hormone pathway that drives pattern hair loss, which is why hair thins again over several months if you stop using it.
Topical minoxidil and oral minoxidil are not the same
The topical solution is applied to the scalp, acts mainly where you put it, and is a pharmacy medicine in Malaysia. Oral minoxidil is a tablet, acts throughout the body, and is a prescription only medicine that must be prescribed and monitored by a doctor. Only the topical solution is supplied on this page.
Minoxidil 5% and minoxidil 2%
Topical minoxidil is commonly made in two strengths. The 5% solution is the strength usually used for pattern hair loss in adults, and it is the strength of both packs here. The 2% solution is a lower strength sometimes chosen when the scalp is easily irritated. Labels write the same 5% concentration in two ways, as 5% w/v or as 50mg/ml, so Avoxidil 50mg/ml and Vello-5 5% w/v contain exactly the same amount of minoxidil.
What minoxidil does not treat
Minoxidil is for gradual, patterned thinning. Sudden shedding, patchy bald spots, hair loss with scarring, scalp pain or an itchy inflamed scalp need a diagnosis first, because a different condition may be behind them. If that sounds like your hair loss, speak to a doctor before buying anything.

How to apply minoxidil 5%
Topical minoxidil is applied to the scalp, not the hair: 1ml twice a day, morning and night, and no more than 2ml in a day. Applying more will not speed anything up.

Part your hair over the thinning area so the applicator can reach the scalp, not the hair.
STEP 3Apply 1ml
That is about 10 sprays with the pump applicator. Spread it gently with your fingertips across the thinning area.
STEP 4Wash your hands
Straight away, so the solution does not transfer to your face or to anyone else.
STEP 5Let it dry
Wait until the scalp is fully dry before a hat, a hairdryer or your pillow. Then repeat once more, about 12 hours later.
How long minoxidil takes to work
Most people see nothing for the first two to four months. Six months of consistent twice daily use is the earliest fair point to judge topical minoxidil, and the benefit is kept only while you keep applying it. Individual results vary.
Weeks 1 to 4
Nothing visible yet. This is the stage most people stop at, which is why nothing changes for them.
Weeks 2 to 6
Shedding may increase. It is a recognised early phase as new hairs push resting hairs out, and it usually settles.
Months 2 to 4
Shedding settles. Hair often feels less fragile before it looks different.
Months 4 to 6
New growth appears as fine, soft, pale hair that thickens over the following months.

Common
- Scalp itching, dryness, flaking or mild irritation
- More shedding than usual in the first weeks, which settles as older hairs are replaced
- Scalp redness or a stinging feeling shortly after applying
Less common
- Unwanted hair growth where the solution has transferred, for example the forehead or cheeks
- Contact dermatitis, often from the alcohol base rather than the minoxidil
- Headache
Stop and get medical help
- Chest pain, or a fast or irregular heartbeat
- Sudden weight gain, or swelling of the hands, ankles or feet
- Dizziness, light headedness or fainting
- Severe scalp rash, blistering or swelling of the face
If you miss a dose, apply the next one at the usual time and do not double up. Using more than the labelled dose does not speed anything up and raises the chance of side effects. Wash your hands after every application, avoid the solution reaching the eyes, mouth or broken skin, and rinse with water if it does. Store below 30C, upright, away from heat, sunlight and open flame, and keep it away from children and pets, since it is harmful if swallowed or applied to animals. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, do not use it. Report side effects to your pharmacist or doctor and to the NPRA.
