How many tablets are in a Propecia 1mg box, and when do I reorder?

Each box holds 28 tablets in 4 strips of 7, so one box lasts four weeks at one tablet a day. The weekly strips make a missed day easy to spot. Reorder when you open your last strip, so delivery arrives before you run out. Three boxes cover about twelve weeks and save RM30 here.

See a doctor if you feel you need more than one tablet a day. The dose for hair loss is always 1mg, and a higher dose does not regrow more hair.

What time of day should I take Propecia, and does food matter?

Any time of day works, with or without food. Food does not change how much finasteride your body absorbs. What matters is taking it at roughly the same time every day, because steady daily use is what keeps it working. Most of my patients tie it to a fixed habit, such as brushing their teeth in the morning. See a doctor if you often forget doses. I missed a Propecia tablet. What should I do?

Skip the missed tablet and take the next one at your usual time. Do not take two in one day to make up for it. One missed day will not undo your progress, because the effect on the scalp builds and fades slowly over weeks, not hours. See a doctor if you have missed several days in a row and are unsure whether to restart at the same dose.

Is it safe for my partner to touch Propecia tablets?

Accepted Answer

Yes, as long as the tablets are whole. Propecia tablets have a film coating that stops contact with the medicine during normal handling. The caution is only for broken or crushed tablets: a woman who is pregnant, or may become pregnant, should not handle them, because finasteride can affect the development of a male baby. See a doctor if a pregnant partner has handled a broken or crushed tablet. Tell her doctor as well.

Can I travel abroad with Propecia?

Yes. Keep the tablets in their original box and strips, with your name on the pharmacy label, and pack them in your hand luggage. Carry a copy of your prescription in case customs or airline staff ask. Take enough for the whole trip plus a few spare days in case of delays. See a doctor if you will be away for longer than your supply lasts, so we can arrange enough boxes before you leave.

Do Propecia side effects go away if I keep taking it?

Accepted Answer

Often, yes. In the original trials, sexual side effects settled in men who stopped Propecia and also in many men who kept taking it. If something bothers you, I usually suggest giving it a few weeks before deciding, unless it is severe. A small number of men have reported effects that lasted after stopping; this is uncommon, and we take it seriously.

What should I do if my mood changes on Propecia?

Accepted Answer

Tell your doctor straight away. Low mood and, rarely, depression have been reported in men taking finasteride, and the product leaflet now lists them. Most men never notice this, but it is something we ask about at every review. Stopping is usually advised if mood changes appear and there is no other clear cause. See a doctor if you feel persistently low, lose interest in things you enjoy, or have any thoughts of self-harm. For thoughts of self-harm, get urgent help the same day.

Does Propecia affect a PSA blood test?

Yes. Finasteride lowers PSA, a blood marker used to check the prostate, by about half after several months. That can make a rising PSA look normal. Always tell the doctor or lab that you take Propecia, so they can interpret the result correctly; doctors usually double the reading for men on finasteride. See a doctor if you are due a prostate check, or you notice urinary symptoms such as a weak stream or getting up at night to pass urine.

Can I donate blood while taking Propecia?

Yes, but you need to wait. Most blood services ask men to wait at least one month after their last finasteride tablet before donating. This stops the medicine reaching a pregnant woman through a transfusion. Tell the blood bank staff that you take finasteride when you register. See a doctor if you donate blood regularly and want to plan a break in treatment around it.

Can I drink alcohol while taking Propecia?

Accepted Answer

Yes. There is no known interaction between alcohol and finasteride 1mg, and you do not need to skip a tablet on days you drink. Finasteride is broken down by the liver, though, so heavy drinking over time is still a concern for your overall health. See a doctor if you have liver disease or drink heavily, because Propecia may not be the right choice for you.

Is the Propecia sold here the same as in a Malaysian pharmacy?

Why do I need a doctor review to buy Propecia online?

Propecia is a prescription only medicine in Malaysia, so a registered doctor must confirm it is safe for you before a pharmacy can dispense it. The doctor checks that your hair loss pattern fits, and looks for liver problems, prostate history, current medicines and plans for a family. The review costs RM1 and is done online. See a doctor if you are unsure whether your hair loss is male pattern hair loss at all, for example patchy loss or sudden shedding.

What happens if the doctor says Propecia is not right for me?

Nothing is dispensed and you are not charged for the medicine. You only pay the RM1 consultation. The doctor will explain why, and suggest what may suit you better, which may be a different treatment or an in-person check with a dermatologist. See a doctor if your hair loss is getting worse quickly, or comes with scalp pain, redness or scaling.
