Pharmacy medicine. Minoxidil 5% topical solution is a pharmacy medicine in Malaysia. A prescription is not required, but it is supplied under the supervision of a registered pharmacist who checks that it is suitable for you. It is for use on the scalp only. Do not use it if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, and keep it away from children and pets.

How to use Vello-5
Use 1ml, which is 10 sprays, twice a day on a dry scalp. Do not use more than 2ml in a day. More does not work faster, it only raises the chance of side effects.
1Dry scalp first
Apply once your hair and scalp are fully dry.
2Part the thin area
Open your hair so the nozzle reaches skin, not hair.
3Ten sprays
Spray 10 times across the thinning area. That is 1ml.
4Spread and wash hands
Spread gently with your fingertips, then wash your hands.
5Let it dry
Wait until it is dry before a hat, a hairdryer or bed.
- Missed a dose? Skip it and carry on at the next usual time. Do not double up.

Vello-5 side effects
Most Vello-5 side effects come from where and how the spray lands: an alcohol-based solution on the scalp, with some drift onto the forehead. These are the ones our doctors see most with Vello-5.
Common
Usually mild. Keep using it and mention it to a pharmacist if it bothers you.
- Scalp itch, dryness or flaking from the alcohol base
- Stinging if sprayed onto a freshly washed or scratched scalp
Less common
Speak to a doctor or pharmacist before carrying on.
- Fine hair on the forehead where the spray drifts
- A red, sore, weeping rash (contact dermatitis)
Stop and get medical help
Stop using Vello-5 and get help the same day.
- Chest pain, a racing heartbeat, dizziness or fainting
- Sudden swelling of hands, feet or face
Who should not use Vello-5
- Pregnancy or breastfeeding
- Under 18
- A broken, sunburnt or inflamed scalp
- Sudden or patchy hair loss, or heart problems, until a doctor has checked you
Doctor's note: the alcohol base is what most often causes scalp itch. Spraying onto skin rather than hair, and using no more than 1ml each time, keeps irritation and facial hair transfer down.

The Vello-5 bottle and spray
Ten sprays of the Vello-5 pump make 1ml, which is one dose. A new pump may need a few presses into the air or a tissue before it gives a full spray, so do this once before your first dose rather than counting those sprays. If the pump starts to spit or misses, check the nozzle is clean and the tube reaches the bottom of the bottle. See a pharmacist if it still does not spray evenly.
Vello-5 and your scalp
In most people it is the base, not the minoxidil. Solutions like Vello-5 use alcohol to carry minoxidil into the skin, and alcohol can sting and dry the scalp, especially if the skin is freshly washed, sunburnt or scratched. Apply only to a fully dry, unbroken scalp and keep to 1ml a dose. See a doctor if you get a red, weeping rash, as that suggests an allergy rather than simple irritation.
Vello-5 price, pack and registration
Both are minoxidil 5% in 60ml. Vello-5 is made in Malaysia by Xepa-Soul Pattinson and costs RM89 here. Avoxidil is made in Taiwan and costs less.
