For a long time, you have been hearing people raving about all good things yoga can do for your body and your mind. Now, you decide it is time to give yoga a try, but you have no idea what it might be like. If you do not want to ask your friends, here is what to expect from your first yoga class.
What to wear
The first important thing to ask about yoga is clothes. Yoga takes many forms. Depending on the specific type of class you take, you will need different kinds of clothes. If you are taking a hot yoga class, you should choose clothes that work well with a lot of sweat, like your running clothes. If you are a man, you can just put on your regular T-shirt.But if you belong to the fairer sex, you should go for a tight-fitting top. Many women are not aware of this, and they have to pull their tops up constantly during poses like the shoulder stand. This causes you some annoying situations while practicing. For example, if you have to keep a hand on your top to cover your stomach, you may risk getting injured.
Yoga gear
All yogis need a good mat. If you don’t have a mat, you may ask your yoga studio to lend you one. Most studios offer renting mats for the day at a nice price. If you are not sure if you really like yoga, you may rent a mat for a few sessions. However, it is advisable to get your own mat as soon as possible because yoga requires you to totally relax. And not many people can relax on a mat that has absorbed the sweat of previous borrowers. Mats come in all materials and colors. You can have either a natural rubber mat or a synthetic one. You can wash your mat with soap, water, and a sponge, then let it air-dry. Do not forget a bottle of water to compensate for the sweat you drop and a towel to clean up after yourself.
Listen
Mats and clothes are just equipment, and absolutely, they are not important as your mind. Please make sure that you have a calm mind, and try to listen to your coach, because they are the ones who help you to get used to practicing yoga. Do not act as if you have known everything. Listen to your coach, your breath and listen to the silence around you. You will find it easy to do yoga.
Concentrate
Concentration is a must in yoga. You must concentrate on your breath, your poses, and especially, your mind. Many people try to do the poses, but their minds are not calm. Their bodies are in the class, but their minds are out of the class, maybe somewhere at home or at work. This will just waste your time because you cannot get the utmost results of yoga if your mind does not concentrate enough. Therefore, try to breathe and forget everything outside the yoga class.
If you still have other concerns about yoga, it is worth doing a little more research by yourself. You can ask the studio about your instructor and their yoga style. If possible, talk to them before register. Having a good understanding of what you are getting into will help you cope better.
