How to Keep Your Eyes Healthy

A pair of good eyes should never be taken for granted. It needs love and care to stay healthy. Here are some tips to help you maintain good eye health:

Healthy diet

Good eye health starts with a healthy diet. To protect yourself from age-related vision conditions such as macular degeneration and cataracts, you need to stock up omega-3 fatty acids, lutein, zinc, and vitamins C and E. To do so, fill your meals with green leafy vegetables, oily fish, eggs, nuts, beans, citrus fruits, oysters, and pork. A healthy diet keeps obesity and diabetes (the leading cause of blindness) at bay.

No tobacco

Smoking increases your risk of cataracts, damaged optic nerve, and macular degeneration. However, it’s hard to quit smoking. Most people do not succeed at the first attempt. So, don’t give up. The more you try, the more chances of success you have. Ask your doctor for help.

Sunglasses

High levels of sun exposure put you at risk of cataracts and macular degeneration. Pick a right pair of shades to spare your eyes from UV rays. Even if you use contact lenses with sun protection, you will still benefit from an extra layer of sunglasses.

Protective goggles

If your job requires you to be in contact with hazardous or airborne materials, never skip protective goggles. If you play high-impact sports that may cause injury to your eyes, wear a helmet with a protective face mask to shield your eyes.

Computer breaks

If you work with computers a lot, it’s advisable to take frequent breaks. Make sure your glasses are up to date. You may talk to your doctor about a special kind of glasses used for computers. Your eyes should be looking slightly down at the screen. Try to avoid glares from lights. Rest your eyes after every 20 minutes and take a 15-minute walk away from your computer every 2 hours. If your eyes are dry, try to blink more often.

Doctor’s visit

It’s important to visit your eye doctor regularly. Eye exams are necessary as they help detect diseases that have no symptoms such as glaucoma. Early diagnosis and treatment increase your chance of a full recovery. There are 2 types of eye doctors:

Ophthalmologists are doctors who specialize in eye care. They can diagnose and treat eye diseases as well as perform eye surgery.

Optometrists can treat eye diseases but do not perform eye surgery. Depending on your eye needs, you can choose to see one of these two.
