Doctors and Specialists For Diabetes

Diabetes can be treated by many kinds of medical experts. Whether you choose a primary care physician or other specialists to take care of your condition, you need to talk to your doctor about testing if you are at risk for diabetes or begin experiencing diabetes symptoms.  Below are some doctors and specialists who can help you with your diabetes diagnosis and treatments.

Doctors and Specialists For Diabetes

Primary care physician

It is necessary to do regular checkups as you age. Base on your symptoms or risk factors, you may need to take urine or blood tests to screen for diabetes. In case you have diabetes, you may receive medication to manage your condition, or you can see a specialist to help monitor your treatment. Your personal doctor is probably a part of your healthcare professional team

Endocrinologist

Type 1 diabetes involves the pancreas gland – a  part of the endocrine system. That is why you will need an endocrinologist, a specialist who diagnoses, treats, and manages pancreatic diseases. Sometimes, type 2 diabetes patients may also need an endocrinologist to keep their symptoms under control.

Eye doctor

Many diabetes patients suffer from cataracts, glaucoma, and damage to the retina (retinopathy). It is advisable to regularly visit an eye doctor, such an optometrist or ophthalmologist, to check for potentially serious conditions.

Podiatrist

Vascular diseases are among the most common medical conditions that diabetes patients experience. This condition prevents blood flow to the small vessels, affecting the feet in particular. People with diabetes tend to lose the ability to heal even minor blisters and cuts. A podiatrist can monitor your feet for any serious infections, thus preventing gangrene and amputation.

Physical trainer or exercise physiologist

Staying active and getting sufficient exercises is the golden formula to control blood sugar levels and maintain a healthy weight. A professional can not only help with your exercising routine but also give you the motivation you need.

Dietitian

Dietary plays a vital role in managing diabetes. However, building a suitable diet to control your diabetes may be difficult.  Enlist the help of a registered dietitian for an eating plan that fits your specific needs.

To get the best results, you should be prepared before visiting your doctor. Call ahead to make sure you get everything right. Make a list of your symptoms and medications, and write down any questions you have. That will greatly help with your treatment.
