What is the Yasmin pill?
Yasmin is a combined contraceptive pill made by Bayer. Each tablet contains two hormones: drospirenone, a progestogen, and ethinylestradiol, an oestrogen. Together they stop an egg being released each month and thicken the mucus at the neck of the womb, helping to prevent pregnancy.
It is a well established combined contraceptive pill. The Malaysian pack holds 21 tablets, and every one of them is active. After the twenty-first tablet you have 7 days with no tablets at all, then start a fresh pack on the eighth day.
It is a prescription-only medicine in Malaysia, so a doctor assesses whether it suits you before it can be dispensed. It does not protect against sexually transmitted infections, so condoms still matter for that.

The 7 day break, and why the restart day matters
Your withdrawal bleed usually arrives during the break, often two or three days in. It may be lighter and shorter than a period off the pill.
The break is genuinely tablet-free, so there is a restart date to keep track of. The most common slip with a 21 day pack is starting the next pack late. That is why many people set a recurring reminder for the restart day, not just for the daily tablet.
Start the new pack on the eighth day even if you are still bleeding. If you follow the pack correctly, you stay protected through the break.
Some people prefer a real week off and find it a clearer rhythm than taking something every single day. That is a personal preference, not a medical advantage.
Taking Yasmin day to day

Same time each day, for 21 days
Take one tablet a day in the order printed on the pack, with or without food. Pick a fixed anchor such as after dinner, and set an alarm for the first few months.

Then 7 days off, then restart
Take no tablets for 7 days, then start the next pack on the eighth day, even if you are still bleeding. A second reminder for the restart day is worth setting.

If you miss a tablet
What to do depends on which tablet you missed and how late you are. A missed tablet next to the break week needs different handling from one in the middle of the pack. Do not guess. Check the leaflet, speak to a doctor or pharmacist the same day, and use condoms until you know you are covered.
Vomiting or severe diarrhoea within a few hours of a tablet can mean the dose was not absorbed. Treat it as a missed tablet and check the leaflet or ask a doctor.

Yasmin may suit you if
- You want contraception you take daily rather than something you think about each time you have sex

Tell your doctor before starting Yasmin if you
- Have had a blood clot in a leg or lung, a stroke or a heart attack
- Have a known clotting disorder, or a close family member who had a clot young
- Smoke and are over 35
- Get migraine with aura
- Have high blood pressure, diabetes with complications, or kidney, liver or adrenal problems
- Take a potassium-sparing medicine such as spironolactone, an ACE inhibitor, an angiotensin receptor blocker, or regular anti-inflammatory painkillers
- Take medicines that can make the pill work less well, such as some epilepsy, HIV or tuberculosis medicines, or St John's wort
- Have had breast cancer
- Have a rare inherited problem with lactose or galactose, since each tablet contains lactose
- Are pregnant, think you might be, or have given birth in the last 6 weeks
Drospirenone can raise potassium, which is why the kidney and medicine questions matter. A doctor may want a blood test before or after you start.
Yasmin pill safety and side effects
Blood clot risk
Malaysia's National Pharmaceutical Regulatory Agency (NPRA) has told healthcare professionals about the risk of blood clots with combined pills that contain drospirenone, and Yasmin is one of the products it named. Studies found this risk higher than with pills containing levonorgestrel, and about the same as with pills containing desogestrel or gestodene. For most people on any combined pill the risk stays low, but it is not zero, so a doctor checks your own history before prescribing.

The Yasmin pill is used to prevent pregnancy. It is a combined pill with a progestogen and an oestrogen in every tablet, taken once a day for 21 days followed by a 7 day break. In Malaysia it is prescription only, so a doctor checks it suits you first.
