What is the Yaz pill?
Yaz is a combined contraceptive pill made by Bayer. Each active tablet contains two hormones: drospirenone, a progestogen, and ethinylestradiol, an oestrogen. Together they stop an egg being released each month and thicken the mucus at the neck of the womb.
It is taken as one tablet a day. The pack holds 28 tablets in a fixed order: 24 active, then 4 inactive. Because there is a tablet for every day of the cycle, there is no week off to remember and no date to count back to.
It is a prescription-only medicine in Malaysia, so a doctor assesses whether it suits you before it can be dispensed. It does not protect against sexually transmitted infections, so condoms still matter for that.

The first 24 tablets are light pink and marked DS inside a hexagon. These are the active tablets. The last 4 are white and marked DP. They contain no hormones.
The white tablets are there so the habit never breaks. You take one tablet every day, whatever day it is, so you are never deciding whether today is a pill day. Your period, called a withdrawal bleed on the pill, usually starts during those four days and may still be going when you begin the next pack.
When you finish tablet 28, start a new pack the next day. No gap, no waiting.

Same time each day
Take one tablet a day, in the order printed on the pack, with or without food. Many people tie it to something fixed, like after dinner or at bedtime. A phone alarm helps for the first few months.

If you miss a tablet
What to do depends on which tablet you missed and how late you are. Do not guess. Check the leaflet and speak to a doctor or pharmacist the same day, and use condoms until you know you are covered.

Starting and switching
When you start in your cycle affects how soon you are protected. Switching from another pill, a patch or an implant has its own rules. Your doctor will tell you which applies to you.
Vomiting or severe diarrhoea within a few hours of a tablet can mean the dose was not absorbed. Treat it as a missed tablet and check the leaflet or ask a doctor.

Who Yaz suits, and who should check first
Yaz may suit you if
- You want contraception you take daily rather than something you think about each time you have sex
- You would rather take a tablet every day than track a break week

Tell your doctor before starting Yaz if you
- Have had a blood clot in a leg or lung, a stroke or a heart attack
- Have a known clotting disorder, or a close family member who had a clot young
- Smoke and are over 35
- Get migraine with aura
- Have high blood pressure, diabetes with complications, or kidney, liver or adrenal problems
- Take a potassium-sparing medicine such as spironolactone, an ACE inhibitor, an angiotensin receptor blocker, or regular anti-inflammatory painkillers
- Take medicines that can make the pill work less well, such as some epilepsy, HIV or tuberculosis medicines, or St John's wort
- Have had breast cancer
- Are pregnant, think you might be, or have given birth in the last 6 weeks
Drospirenone can raise potassium, which is why the kidney and medicine questions matter. A doctor may want a blood test before or after you start.
Yaz safety and side effects
Blood clot risk
Malaysia's National Pharmaceutical Regulatory Agency (NPRA) has issued guidance to healthcare professionals about the risk of blood clots with combined pills containing drospirenone, naming Yaz. Published studies found the risk higher than with pills containing levonorgestrel, and similar to pills containing desogestrel or gestodene. The overall risk on any combined pill stays low, but it is not zero. A doctor will weigh it against your own history before prescribing.

About the Yaz pill
Yaz is used to prevent pregnancy. It is a combined pill, so it contains a progestogen and an oestrogen, and it is taken as one tablet every day. In Malaysia it is prescription only, so a doctor checks that it suits you before it is dispensed.
Both contain drospirenone, but the routine and oestrogen dose differ. Yaz has 24 active and 4 inactive tablets with 20 micrograms of ethinylestradiol. Yasmin has 21 active tablets followed by a 7-day break, with 30 micrograms. Your doctor can help you decide which suits you.
