Common

Rare but serious: get help immediately

- Chest pain during sexual activity.
Contraindications
DO NOT take sildenafil if you:
- Take any form of nitrate (e.g. glyceryl trinitrate/GTN, isosorbide) or nitric-oxide donor (e.g. nicorandil, amyl nitrite/"poppers"). This combination can cause a life-threatening drop in blood pressure.
- Take riociguat (for pulmonary hypertension).
- Have severe heart disease that makes sexual activity unsafe, a heart attack in the last 90 days, unstable angina, or a stroke in the last 6 months.
- Have severe liver failure, very low blood pressure (<90/50), or uncontrolled high blood pressure (>170/100).
- Have a history of NAION or PDE5-related vision loss.
- Have hereditary retinal disorders such as retinitis pigmentosa.
- Are allergic to sildenafil.
For kidney impairment, older age, or use of alpha-blockers/antihypertensives, your doctor may start at 25mg or 50mg instead of 100mg.

- Other ED medicines: tadalafil (Cialis), vardenafil (Levitra), avanafil (Stendra).

- Alpha-blockers for BPH or blood pressure: tamsulosin, doxazosin, terazosin, alfuzosin, prazosin.
- Multiple blood pressure medicines (ACE inhibitors, ARBs, beta-blockers, diuretics).
- Strong CYP3A4 inhibitors (ketoconazole, itraconazole, ritonavir, clarithromycin, erythromycin), which raise sildenafil levels.
- CYP3A4 inducers (rifampicin, phenytoin, carbamazepine, phenobarbital, St John's Wort), which reduce effectiveness.
- HIV/hepatitis medicines (protease inhibitors, cobicistat).
- Severe kidney or liver disease, where the starting dose is usually 25mg.
USE WITH CAUTION
Food, drink & lifestyle
- High-fat or heavy meals right before your dose: they slow absorption and delay the onset.
- Grapefruit juice and grapefruit: avoid. It can raise sildenafil levels in your blood.
- Heavy alcohol (>3 units): higher risk of dizziness, headache, low blood pressure, and a weaker response.
- Traditional or herbal medicine: ginseng, yohimbine, and unregistered "male enhancement" pills may interact or secretly contain sildenafil.
SAFE
Generally safe / no major interaction
- A light meal is fine. Just avoid a heavy or fatty meal right before you take it.
- Coffee and tea in normal amounts.
- Most everyday painkillers (paracetamol, ibuprofen), but always double-check with a pharmacist.

I suddenly lost vision or hearing. What should I do?
Stop taking sildenafil immediately and get medical help right away. Sudden loss of vision in one eye (NAION) or sudden hearing loss are rare but serious side effects. Go to the emergency department or call 999.
Can I take chest-pain medicine (GTN) after Viagra?
NO. Avoid all nitrate medicines (nitroglycerin, isosorbide, GTN spray) and "poppers" for at least 24 hours after your last dose of sildenafil. The combination can cause a life-threatening drop in blood pressure. Tell any doctor or paramedic treating you that you've taken sildenafil.
