Development & Behavior
How should my baby be developing?
At this point, you will realize how fast your baby grows. In the fourth week of the second month, your baby may:
- Laugh in an unremitting way;
- Pinch hands together;
- When lying on his stomach, she can lift her head 90 degrees;
- Laugh out loud;
- Scream when she’s needs something;
- Follow objects placed 15 cm away from her position and move the baby’s face 180 degrees (from side to side).
How to support my baby?
Reading aloud is one of the best ways to support to development of your baby. Hearing your voice can help his ears in tune with the rhythm of the spoken language. Change the tone when reading, accent and sing to your baby will help the interaction between you and your baby more interesting. If he just look the other way or show no interest while you are reading, let him take a rest for a while. You need to pay attention and react upon under her.
There are many good books that you can read for your baby. Choose books with large pictures, brilliant and simple characters or the books which just only have pictures so that you can describe again for your baby. When choosing a book, you do not have too much focus on age limits. Books which are designed for older children can still attract little baby if these picture books have clear, sharp and bright colors.
You can create a positive atmosphere for the baby by:
- Cuddle baby;
- Interact with the baby;
- Talk with your child;
- Make him feel relax by playing games;
- Create a separate space for the baby;
- Follow your baby’s interests;
- Make all things at the right time.
Health & Safety
What should I discuss with my doctor?
Depending on the specific condition of the baby, the doctor will perform physical tests overall. Your doctor may:
- Measure your weight, height, head circumference and developmental progress of the baby after birth;
- Physical exam, including check previous issues;
- Guide all things that you need to be interested in the following months regarding the feeding, sleeping, growth and safety for babies;
- Answer the questions you wonder: Your baby has a reaction like what when your baby is immunized? How should you respond? You should call your doctor if your child has any reaction or not?
You should also pay attention to the health problems, job problems in feeding / eating or changes in the family which are occurred in over a month. Please record the information and guidance of your doctor. Then write down all necessary information, such as weight, height, head circumference, birthmarks, immunization, disease, medications administered, test results … in the baby’s health record .
What should I know?
Here are some things you should know about:
Your baby’s flat head
If the baby’s head was flat, probably due to the baby was sleeping too long in the same position. When your baby was born, the baby’s skull bones are very soft and flexible, so when lying on his back at night, the baby’s head can be flattened at the position that your baby overrides mattress. But you do not worry. In many cases, no matter how deep the flat wounds are, it will return to normal when your child begins to crawl and sit.
But to ensure that everything is fine, you should take her to a pediatric neurologist or specialist in craniofacial to determine whether the baby’s situation has serious and needs treatment or not. If the case was not serious, the doctor may instruct you to try some home treatment methods, such as let your infant lying (when baby’s awake and be supervised by his’s parents) to strengthen the neck muscles for infant.
Baby suffers balding or hair loss
Baldness, which is often caused by the baby’s posture, is not a problem when the child has a serious health. Babies tend to keep the head in the same position and rub down on the mattress or rub on the edge crib, which can make hair fall out more at these locations. This condition will cease when the baby is older and change the habits which are listed above.
It is difficult to predict when the hair will grow back. Most children will have two separated handful hair before he was a year old, however the time that hair loss and hair growth are very different. Some baby hair will grow back immediately after the loss, while other babies will take more time. The color and texture of the new hair may differ significantly from the baby’s hair when they were born.
Hernias usually is confined to a regular adult who usually carry too many heavy items. But in reality even for small children never have to carry, anything heavy, the baby may get a hernia. Disc prolapse can frequently happen in babies, especially boys, the premature baby and the twins. When your child has a herniated disk, you can identify these early signs such as tumor in one of the adjacent folds between the thighs and abdomen, especially when crying or agitation. Tumors often shrink when the baby quiets. Your child may also suffer scrotal hernia when the entire intestines slide down to the scrotum pipeline caused scrotal swelling or bulging. Hernias usually causes no discomfort to the baby, and if treated promptly, it will not be dangerous for the baby.
However, if you notice a lump or swelling there at his groin or scrotum, please take him to a doctor as soon as possible. Doctors often recommend treatment methods for the baby when the baby was diagnosed with a hernia. In some cases, doctors may perform surgery for children. Surgery in such cases are often very simple, high success rate and can be quickly discharged.
There are very few cases of recurrent disc herniation after surgery. Herniated disc which is untreated in newborns can lead to clogged part by part hernia agency pinched by the muscle layer of the inguinal canal, thereby hinder blood circulation and digestion in the intestine. The result is that your children will vomit, pain, even shocked. If you see the baby suddenly cried out in pain, vomiting and no stool, please take him to a doctor immediately. If the doctor stays away, the baby needs to be taken to the nearest emergency room. Take a slight lifting on her lower body and put ice packs on the way to the emergency room to help shrink her intestine, but do not try to push it in by hand.
What I am concerned about?
Here are some things you may be concerned about:
The development indicators are useful for comparing your child with a variety of other normal children to assess the progress of the baby and found out if your baby’s retardation, but compare your child with other children or with his siblings would cause you worry and disappointment in a way which is not necessary.
Two completely normal baby when placed under different circumstances will develop in different directions: a baby can talk more and talk sooner, another child has faster physical development, such as possible early rolled. The difference between the baby will be more pronounced than when she was a year old: she can crawl but begin to walk when aging 15 months old, but there are children who cannot crawl yet but know how to walk when they’re 10 months. Thus the evaluation of the parents are just subjective opinion but not completely accurate. Whose parents did not even realize that the baby has started to practice conversation by chirping, while others could hear the baby say “baba”. All this shows that you should not compare your baby with the other baby. Remember that this comparison is really meaningless.
