Foods That Pregnant Women Should Never Eat

By Medically reviewed by Dr. Duyen Le.

During pregnancy, many expectant mothers might develop cravings for certain kind of foods. Eating various food types help you consume enough nutrients for the growth of your baby. Yet, when it comes to pregnancy, there are certain foods you must definitely avoid to protect the health of your unborn child and your own health. The following list will show 5 foods which have been warned to be avoided during pregnancy by well-known scientists.

1. Cheese

Cheeses are delicious. However, pregnant women should avoid several types of soft cheeses such as brie, Camembert, feta, Mexican style cheeses and other cheeses made with the same coating style. Also, avoid soft blue-veined cheese such as Gorgonzola or Roquefort. These types of cheeses are made with mold to get the specific flavor. So, they contain many bacteria that can cause listeriosis. Adults rarely get listeria infection, but only a mild form of listeria infection in a pregnant woman can lead to serious health impacts such as miscarriage or preterm birth. Hence, only pick cheese products which are made from pasteurized milk for your newborn safety.

2. Raw eggs

In order to avoid getting salmonella, pregnant women should avoid eating raw eggs or any food kinds that contain it. Some kind of homemade sauces such as mayonnaise, caesar dressings, ice cream or cake might have raw eggs as well. It’s better to pick manufactured products like ice cream, mayonnaise, dressings or eggnog made from pasteurized eggs to decrease the risk of getting salmonella.

3. Raw shellfish

Shellfish such as oysters, clams, and mussels contain high calcium levels which are very good for the unborn child’s development. But pregnant women should not eat undercooked shellfish to avoid seafood-borne diseases. Through cooking, some bacteria in shellfish types will be destroyed. However, some might still exist through high temperature. Therefore, it’s best to avoid all kind of shellfish until your baby is born.

4. Smoked fish

Smoked fish or smoked seafood in general often contains a high amount of listeria. Many pregnant women just have to buy this fish type whenever they pass by a grocery store. If you cannot resist these fish, it would be safer to cook well before eating.

5. Raw meat

Pregnant women should be careful when eating meat or poultry which still have a pink trace or blood. Sausages, cold meats like salami, chorizo, pepperoni, ham or minced meat are rarely cooked so they might contain bacteria or parasites.
