25% pregnant women experience changes in the skin during pregnancy. Those changes include acne, darken skin, stretch marks, and even hives. Hives happen because of allergic reactions, medicine reactions or insect bites. Hormonal changes during pregnancy can also be a trigger of hives.

Causes of hives during pregnancy

Allergic reactions are mostly the cause. Those reactions can come from anything – food, mosquito bites, pollen, animal dander, medicine or beauty products like shampoos. Also, scratching, putting pressure on the skin or suffering from stress could be the culprits of hives during pregnancy.

In addition, during pregnancy, along with the growing belly, the skin gets dryer with more stretching, making the expectant mother become more prone to hives. And 1 in 150 mothers-to-be develops PUPP – a serious skin condition.

PUPP, what is it?

PUPP stands for pruritic urticarial papules and plaques of pregnancy. Women developing PUPP experience vast red and raised patches on their skin. The outbreak starts at the abdomen. Later on, it spreads to the arms and legs. Extreme itchiness may go along with these outbreaks. Research shows that PUPP has something to do with genes. However, researchers still do not know exactly what causes PUPP. They just see that PUPP happens more in first-time mothers.

How to treat hives during pregnancy?

−Small rashes will disappear by themselves. However, pregnant women must remember not to scrub the affected area. Avoid using soaps if possible since soaps may worsen the hives.
−A bath with oatmeal or baking soda may help with the itchiness. Also, using moisturizers is a good choice to avoid dryness and itching.
−Some antihistamines safe for pregnant women are Allegra, Benadryl, and Chlor-Trimeton, Claritin, and Zyrtec. However, remember to discuss with your doctor before using any medication.
−With PUPP, oral medications or anti-itch creams may be prescribed.

How to prevent hives during pregnancy?

Here are some tips for you:

−Cut down on hot showers as they can take away the natural oil in the skin, making it becomes dry and more prone to hives.
−Do not choose tight clothing. Being blocked in the surface and under pressure, the skin may develop hives.
−Do not scratch your skin
−Stay away from stress. There are many interesting de-stress methods.

Those tips may not work for all cases of hives, but they will help relieve the condition to some extent while speeding up the healing process.
