How to Recover After a Traumatic Birth (Part 2)

By Medically reviewed by Duyen Le, MD.

Who can be at risk for PTSD?

A woman is more prone to PTSD if she:

  • Had a prolonged and painful
  • Had an assisted birth with the use of ventouse or forceps.
  • Had an emergency C-section
  • Gave birth to a baby with a
  • Learned that her baby was sent to special care.
  • Experience extremely fear for herself and her baby’s life during or after the delivery.
  • Felt helpless or powerless during the birth event.
  • Had gone through a past traumatic event.

How to overcome a traumatic birth?

You should never under evaluate a traumatic birth, hoping that the emotional scar will go away on its own. Do not suffer it all alone since you always have support. Share your feelings with other people is really helpful.

Share with your GP

Any questions about the birth can be posed to your doctor. He or she will give you best advice. You can also look for support groups where there are women having the same problem with yours and they can give you tips based on their experience.

Share with your partner

You can always count on your husband. However, if you two are facing troubles with your relationship, seek help from counselors. You are not the only one who is suffering. Your partner is upset seeing your struggles as well.

Look for a PTSD expert

PTSD can associate with PND (postnatal depression). They overlap and put double burdens on your well-being. Though they are all mental condition, they are different and need different and particular treatment. Therefore, if you think that you’re experiencing PTSD, seek help from a PTSD expert. Ask your doctor for recommendations of a trustworthy expert. Many people choose to run away from painful memories but actually it just makes the trauma worse. Face the event and the sooner you reach out for help, the better.

Review and discuss your labor notes

If you suffer from anxiety because you can not remember the parts of the birth, review your labor notes may help. Do it with a midwife or antenatal teacher. There are medical jargons that you may not understand without their help. This review does not mean to rewrite your memory of the event or give you correct the version of the birth. It’s just that after the review, you may be able to fill in memory blanks and be free from the anxiety.

Call for a debriefing service

Many hospitals nowadays have the birth debriefing service. It is a kind of birth reflections. Ask your hospital for this service. You can use the service about 6 weeks after the birth. Choose the right time and go over your traumatic birth experience.

Hello Health Group does not provide medical advice, diagnosis or treatment.
