Will Green Tea Help Me Get Pregnant?

By Medically reviewed by Dr. Duyen Le.

There are some studies say that drinking green tea may increase the chance of getting pregnant. However, others proved that the consumption of caffeine in green tea could affect your body, especially your conceiving ability. In this article, we will find out will green tea actually help to get pregnant as you think.

How much do you know about green tea?

Green tea is seen as a popular drink in the world that has lots of health benefits. It is derived from the leaves of the plant called Camellia sinensis. Then, people use unfermented leaves to make green tea. Green tea contains roughly 30% to 40% of polyphenols, which act as powerful antioxidants. Besides, polyphenols are considered as catechins. Green tea has six catechin compounds, including catechin, gallaocatechin, epicatechin, epigallocatechin, epicatechin gallate, and apigallocatechin gallate (EGCG). Furthermore, green tea contains alkaloids, such as caffeine, theobromine, and theophylline.

According to scientists, green tea brings lots of benefits in our life, such as losing weight, reducing the risk of heart disease and cancer, smoking less, eating less fat, and doing exercise regularly. Nowadays, green tea products are available as dried leaf tea, extracts made from the leaves and leaf buds, capsules, and liquid preparations.

Will green tea help me get pregnant?

Many people say that drinking green tea help increase the rate of fertility. The study from Kaiser Permanente Medical Care Program of Northern California in Oakland shows that people who drank more than one-half cup of green tea day by day got their ability of pregnancy two times than others did not. This is because a chemical in tea can increase fertility in women.

On the other hand, other studies proved that a caffeine in tea could affect your conceiving. People who drink more than 300 milligrams of caffeine during their pregnancy likely give birth that their babies are small for their gestational age. It seems like science doesn’t help here.

So, if you are trying to get pregnant or you get difficult on conceiving or you have irregular periods, you need to see a fertility specialist for the best result. Besides, you may use green tea as a drink, but everything has its advantages and disadvantages, you should drink it with an average rate. An average cup of green tea consists of 20mg of caffeine. According to the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology and experts, the recommended intake of caffeine should be less than 200mg per day.
