Development & Behavior

What should my toddler be doing right now?

Whether your child is a social butterfly or a wallflower, he will begin to show an increasing interest in other children. These first friendships are very real to your child. They also help preschoolers practice social skills and add variety to their play. If your child attends daycare, he may already be gravitating to certain favorite playmates.

Preschoolers seem to learn so much, so fast. Can you know at this age if your child is gifted? Learning specialists say that sometimes it is clear from infancy that a child learns more quickly than others his age. But for many children, signs of giftedness are not evident until the elementary school years.

Your child is more in control of his movements. Now he can play with small objects easily and stack towers of blocks without knocking over. He can also concentrate for slightly longer periods of time, as much as 20 minutes if he is deeply engaged.

What should my toddler be preparing to do?

To help foster early friendships:

  • Keep play dates small. Having too many children in one place can be overwhelming and invite fights. A good rule of thumb: Children do well in groups the size of their age. So, 2-year-olds do best in pairs.
  • Keep playtime short. Especially with new friends, do not count on more than a half hour to an hour of peaceful play at this age.
  • Mix up the ages. Your 2-year-old can learn a lot from slightly older preschoolers and younger toddlers, too.
  • Avoid toys when you can. Running around outside or playing with simple objects — have a big box on hand? — encourages interactions without the possessiveness that triggers arguments. Use the word “friend” to talk about your friends and your child’s.

Doctor visits

What should happen to my toddler when I visit my doctor?

If you see your child masturbate, do not panic. Masturbation is a completely normal thing to do. It does not cause physical harm, pose a health risk, or mean your child is going to turn into a sex maniac. Masturbation in young children is not sexual because young children do not know what sex is. Young children masturbate because your child is exploring his body.

However, when it comes to masturbation too much of a good thing may indicate a problem. If your child masturbates constantly or excessively, it may be a sign he is feeling anxious or emotionally overwhelmed. If you think this may be the case, check in with his doctor for advice.

What should I tell my doctor?

At this age, you are probably wondering when to put your child into preschool. It may be stressful to pick the right preschool for your child. Here are some tips to make sure the preschool you choose will help support your child’s development.

  • Make sure the preschool is clean and sanitary. The preschool is a breeding ground for germs. Preschoolers are the easiest to spread certain diseases. Such as hand foot and mouth disease and head lice. You should ask how often they wash their toys and mats.
  • You should go visit the school. You can get a better evaluation of the environment. Is there a playground? Is the classroom big enough? For how many students?
  • Talk to the teacher. It’s important to have a good relationship with your child’s teacher. You can also ask questions about what a typical day looks like.

There are many different methods of teaching and types of schools. You should find what is best for your child.

What to expect

What health concerns should I expect?

Small amounts of viewing — under two hours per day for 2-year-olds – won’t harm your child. But you should keep in mind that excessive TV viewing by the very young has been linked with slower language development, obesity, and attention problems.

It is exhausting being vigilant 24/7 with your young child. But kids ages 1 and 2 are especially vulnerable to accidents like drowning and poisoning. So be especially wary during critical stress hours: the morning rushes out the door, right before dinner, at parties, on vacation, when you have guests, or when you are running late. These are the most time you are distracted.
