How should my baby be developing?

Your baby may start to show signs of first emotions: fear of strangers. Babies can get close to you and be anxious when they are surrounded by full of strangers. They also may cry if a stranger suddenly touches them. However, the fact that your baby is fear of strangers does not mean you do not expose your baby to strangers. It would be very beneficial for your child to be exposed to more people than just contacting with you and your partner, or family member. Remember that children need patience and understanding from you in order to pass the milestone of this important development.

 At the week 22, the baby will be able to:

  • Roll in one direction;
  • Withstand heavy loads on foot pounds;
  • Say the words in combination with some consonants and vowels;
  • Joke (emit joking sound with saliva splash);
  • Return to the direction of the sound.

How to support my baby?

Abuse meal time with family to communicate with child. Your baby will enjoy watching you eat and even baby can eat more. In the next months, they will can easily sit and take the food by hand. This further enhances the ability of your baby when eating.

Currently, they can sit from the supine position and fight with both hands. If your baby can sit, you should be nearby to support them even when you put   a cushion in case they might fall. They may have mastered the skills while sitting but they still may lose interest in being upright and tumbling.

When you are with people that your child does not know, you should try not to be ashamed and embarrassed when they cry in the arms of others. Just bring your baby close to you and calm your baby by holding your baby. Tell your friends and your family to approach your baby in a slow and soft way.

Health & Safety

What should I discuss with my doctor?

Most doctors will not arrange health checks for your baby this month. On the positive side, this means they are supposed not to have any serious problems; on the negative side, you will not be able to know your baby is growing like what. You should prepare questions for checks in the next month, but do not hesitate to call your doctor right away if you have any problems that you can not wait until the next follow-up visit.

What should I know?

Here are some things you should know about:

Constipation

How often your baby has bowel movement may depend on the time and what they eat, activity levels and how quick your baby’s body digest food. Constipation occurs when stool is in the bowel or your baby tries to delay bowel movements. They may have constipation if you notice that your baby has the following symptoms:

  • Stool of your baby’s hard and dry or has blood;
  • Three or more days have passed since the last bowel movement of the baby;
  • Theyshow persistent discomfort bowel movements.

If the baby is fed only with breast milk, constipation is very rare. Talk to your doctor if your baby has hard stool, dry or painful bowel movements. When combined with other symptoms such as nausea or bloated abdomen, the baby may be suffering from a more serious condition, such as bowel obstruction.

If they only drink powdered milk, constipation may occur because some brands of milk are unsuitable with the atopic of your baby. Ask your doctor about switching to use other milk brands for the baby.

If you’re feeding your baby with rice cereals, most likely this is the culprit because it contains less fiber. Try adding pureed fruits like pears or prunes or vegetables with grains. You can also switch to feed oats or barley cereals instead.

Constipation can also be caused by a deficiency or dehydration, so you should let your babydrink more water to help resolve this situation. If your baby has weaning time, try to feed more plum or drink pear juice. In addtion, you can add 30 ml of diluted juice with 30 ml of water or juice into formula or breast milk after milking out.

Besides changing your baby’s diet, here are a few tips for you to help your baby get healthy soon:

  • Pedal baby’s leg motion lightly when they are lying;
  • Massage gently but decisively at abdomen below the navel. If you feel the baby’s abdomen is hard to massage, hit steadily in that position for a moment;
  • If you see your baby is tense when it comes to take a shit, let the baby soak in a warm bath to relax muscles.

You can ese glycerin anal suppository or rectal stimulation of the baby by lubricating rectal thermometer with oil as a temporary measure, but it must be approved by your doctor. If constipation is not improved by these interventions, the doctor may suggest you take to some kind of laxative medications for your baby.

Baby is pretending to cough

Even from the 5th month, many babies have realized that the whole world is a stage and you are an avid fan of them. So when they find out that a little cough will attract your attention, your baby often do it childishly to lure you. As long as the baby’s healthy and coughing seems under control, you should not be too concerned about it. They will abandon it when finding it bored.

My Concerns

What I am concerned about?

Here are some things you may be concerned about:

Your baby’s diet

Your baby’s diet should have the following components:

  • Protein;
  • Foods containing calcium;
  • Seeds of pure and complex forms of starch;
  • The green leafy vegetables and fruits, yellow fruits;
  • Foods that contain vitamin C;
  • The types of vegetables and other fruits;
  • Foods that are high in fat;
  • Foods containing iron;
  • Foods containing salt;
  • Water;
  • Functional food, vitamin supplements.

Your baby’s nap

Although your baby is about in the fifth month, they will have three or four regular sleeps for an hour every day, some baby will back to sleep about twenty minutes at a time, while others only have twice but longer sleep, each approximately 1.5 to 2 hours. However, the number and length of your baby’s sleep is not important in theire sleep duration (average of 14 hours 30 minutes a day when they are five months old). That baby sleep longer also means that you have more time to do things. In addition, children who often have a nap during the day will also tend to nap at night. You can try to encourage your baby to sleep longer by:

  • Prepare for babies a comfortable place to sleep. If tthe baby sleeps on your shoulder , it can make it difficult not only for you but also make your baby’s sleep not deep and long enough.
  • Keep the room temperature comfortable, not too hot nor too cold, and ensure child is dressed appropriately.
  • Sleep on time. Do not put your baby to sleep just before meals when the stomach is empty, or when the baby needs changing diapers (your baby will not sleep longer with wet diapers), when guests come, or when there is noise or any time you believe that it can prevent the baby from sleeping long.

Although many children can adjust their sleep pretty well, the baby who does not get enough sleep can also sleep according to the demand. If your child often seems to be cranky, maybe the baby is not getting enough deep sleep. In case they sleep very little but they are totally happy, you will have to accept the fact that your child is one of the kids that does not need a lot of time sleeping. Contact your doctor if you have any questions.
